Definitely doesn’t seem to be acting like Maddie. I am also reminded of the illusion where a piece of cloth has wires embedded in it so that it looks like there’s something covered by the cloth. You can then hold the cloth by one corner and it looks like a normal piece of fabric.

So there is an interesting possible accompanying patter. Point the knife at the cloth and say “Knife of oblivion. Destroy.” and then let the cloth flop open to reveal that there’s nothing inside. This means that there is apparently nothing to fight for. She can then point the knife at the bug boss, threaten here with oblivion, and get her to release everyone.

Yeah, doesn’t seem like Maddie at all. I would say it is Y.T. who has been polymorphed by the Speak-n-Spell and is holding a fake. Maddie has the Speak-n-Spell and is on the rescue for Rusty.

You know, a bit of selfishness on Maddie’s part would be good before turning over the Speak-n-Spell. She should bring back her vorpal halberd.

That’s not selfishness, that’s sense. And even Maddie can be that sensible, given her demand for a weapon that garnered her that — trident.

Hmmm…I can’t help but catch on to the fact that in the comic above and the one before it, Maddie hasss carefully picked what vocabulary to utter and what vocabulary to avoid…nearly perfectly in fact.

Okay, so she’s having a little more fun there in panel 2 than is strictly polite.

“Intelligent creature? I’m Madeline the Mammal, you ssskittering ssstinkbug! Why, I’ve sssometimesss done asss many as sssix ssstupid thingsss before breakfassst!”

Oh dear. It appears the only thing cuter than Madeline, is Y.T. pretending to be Madeline.

Until now, I thought the gems on the myrmarch’s thorax were attached with sovereign glue or a similar grade adhesive. Guess I was wrong, given that several just dislodged on impact.

      Actually, that’s her abdomen.

Right. The thorax is basically equivalent to the human torso, in that it’s where the limbs attach. Most of the internal organs are in the abdomen, however.

I wonder what an exorbitant quantity of time had been required to write dialogue for Y.T. without utilizing the one letter that would give away her identity?

I wonder how much rewriting the dialog needed.

It’s not even just one letter, it’s one SOUND, which is harder to watch out for. Whenever I write hypothetical dialogue for Y-T, I realize the moment I’ve clicked Submit, that I missed at least one soft c, or x, or “tion” sound.

The last panel also sounds a bit like YTs southern accent coming through…

Whereas in the panel just before that, the “Ew, pointy!” is vintage Madeline. Or, at least, “Madeline precisely as Y-T would envision her talking.”

Well, Madeline is not-French where Y-T is not-Texan, so in-character, that’s EXACTLY what she just said. 🙂

Apart from her name, what exactly is (not-)French about her?

I find it hilarious that the queen suddenly lost all of her smug composure in that dive for what might be a fake artifact.

I almost feel like the sssssslip of the tongue in the second panel is giving too much away. Maddie’s masterfully made manic expression should be enough of a tell.

Well there’s yer problem, Maddie ain’t exactly an intelligent creature!

Also, ‘Thorax’? Not complaining, just confused why and how that could be used as an expletive.

Wait, she’s extending her S, acting out of character (more cunning) and I’ve read TVtropes.

      (Genuinely impressed) You clever bastard.
