Also, I’m not sure just how close to “RL” the Esteemed_Author is trying to be, but in most ant-colonies, the workers are all different forms of “drones” — basically females who were “neutered” even before they were born.

That said, something feels weird about Rusty shouting “Help!”. I mean, yes, that’s a one-syllable sentence that should be firmly within his linguistic capabilities… but the thing is, even normal people who usually speak in full sentences would often just shout “Help!” in this situation. So somehow, it just feels too much like normal, proper English to sound like something Rusty would say. Even though I know that’s silly.
Yes, I think what feels “off” is that Rusty is more of someone who asks permission in fragments, rather than gives orders. It would be like having Rusty be leading the party and then suddenly say, “stop! Trap!”: that sounds too ordinary for our little guy 🙂
I don’t believe it – until a few days ago I had never heard of this comic. Then somebody on a different comic forum talked about a paladin using gardening tools in combat. It was enough to make me curious.
And here I am now, at the end of the archives, having enjoyed every single page. Seriously, there wasn’t a single page where I was disappointed in the writing, or the art, or anything. Maybe I’m easy to please but Rusty & Co hits my sweet spot. Plus, the readers seem to be a nice community, too.

“Drones” are the males. They mate once and are then left to die.
The sterile workers are all female, and are not “drones”.
However, while in real life all non-reproductive ants are female, the comic’s formians do not appear to follow this, as the ex-bodyguards were explicitly identified as male (Madeline refered to one of them as “Mr.”, and their own boss, who should definitely be familiar with her own species’ biology, called them “boys”).

The surprising part isn’t that he talked. It’s that he uttered a sentence without the word “eat” in it.

I sometimes forget that Rusty can say things besides “eat X” or “no eat”.
There are times where there are more pressing issues than food.
“No squash!” is another.
