Could be, though Maddie seems to be trying to tell YT she can’t use the Speak-n-Spell before knowing what spell she was inputting. I suppose she could’ve guessed that Heal was likely, but it seems like she meant more in general.
I’m presuming that;s what made Tiffany think “negative energy” – healing spells that work on the living use positive energy. (Negative energy only heals undead.)

I see Maddie has learned how to target her attacks on YT
So wait, why’d it suddenly stop working? Was it whatever Maddie did to the guests in the previous strip?
Either it somehow got damaged by Maddie’s Turn Undead or due to it being a negative energy-powered device, it can’t cast spells that are positive energy, like Heal or Cure Light Wounds.
Or the act of casting positive energy spells hurts the souls that it’s using as a power source, weakening it.
Notice also that YT opened the back of the device, as if to check the batteries. That’s when the bound souls escaped.
I think the sequence was roughly,
– Maddie warns YT that she “can’t” use the artifact, because she knows it’s powered by souls in agony.
– YT tries to cast heal, which fails, since you can’t power that spell with negative energy.
– YT, not yet realizing the reason for spell failure, opens the device to investigate.
– Trapped souls escape, and YT now understands the facts she states in the last panel.

I don’t think it’s that complicated. I think it failed because it casts arcane magic and YT tried a divine spell.
Ah, the all-important difference between “can’t” and “shouldn’t”.
What’s the problem? It’s not like the guests are using their souls.
The question is would they be using their souls if they weren’t trapped in the artifact.
We might be about to find out the answer.
