I’m not sure if we’ve seen it before, but I love how Maddie’s holy symbol is a heart pendant.

Our resident rust monster didn’t do all that much, did he? He got a metal bath and then was captured so that YT slithered after him. Am I missing something?

Rusty usually lets the other characters take the from stage, while he takes the curtain.

Probably because he’s hoping one day it’ll be the iron curtain.

I don’t think we’ve seen the “they stab it with their steely knives, but they just can’t kill the beast” bit yet. and that sounds tailor made for a Rust Monster. πŸ™‚

I’ve noticed that seems to be a pattern. He’s a bit single-minded for a title character, which makes it hard to give him an active role.

“Title character” doesn’t necessarily equate to “main character”.

Rusty is more of a mascot for the webcomic.

Cube may nominally be smarter, but I find the fact that he can’t talk makes him less interesting as a character. Rusty displays more character, and even if 75% of it is “eat <metal>”, 25% of it isn’t. (Just eight pages ago saw the ants trying and failing to win him over with bribery. He knows there’s more important things than food.)

Also, while Rusty may have a rather straightforward gimmick, he finds a surprising variety of creative ways to use that gimmick, which I find entertaining. It’s one of those “restrictions breed creativity” things: because Rusty has clearly-defined limits on what he can do, it’s interesting seeing how he makes use of it. While Cube’s abilities are just defined as “whatever the artist thought looked cool, even if it’s something a gelatinous cube has no business doing”, which combined with his inability to express a personality makes him pretty boring to me.

Mimic is the only one of the nominal main characters who speaks in full sentences, but he definitely wouldn’t have been able to handle any of these adventures on his own. He has barely any combat ability.

Then again, despite the comic officially being about the trio of monster adventurers, their humanoid friends spend a lot of time in the spotlight, too.

I guess I’m rambling. What it comes down to is, I like Rusty πŸ™‚ You don’t need to be a genius philosopher to be an interesting character.

Pretty sure she just pulled a Turn Undead. Especially given the alt-text :p

[And also, that the changes mentioned here – https://twitter.com/rustyandco/status/1270748387047084032 , following on from https://twitter.com/rustyandco/status/1268218381968293889 – means that Maddie originally waded in eyes-wide-shut as usual, and the Turn Undead was an alternative to that.

I think Pretzelcoatl was suggesting that Y.T. is *going* to use the artifact to heal herself.

That raises the question, though: can it be used to cast divine spells, or only arcane?

        • Pretzelcoatl
          June 11, 2020, 4:39 am | # | Reply

I was indeed thinking that would make a good next spell, but I hadn’t considered the arcane-vs.-divine element. A Wish spell could replicate Heal, but it may be too high-level for the artifact, and also requires certain components that might make it inaccessible. There’s still Cure Critical Wounds, though, which bards can cast as arcane.

Has it cast anything other than Sorcerer/Wizard spells so far? Bard spells are their own separate group.

And one of the reasons Tiff was looking for Maddie in the first place was that Paladins can heal. (When Maddie does it, it comes with a full fanfare!)

Pretzel was likely suggesting which spell to… uh… spell next, to fix Maddie up. Turn Undead is not a spell, after all.

It doesn’t look to me like Maddie needs any healing, though. Y.T. is the one that’s in rough shape.

Maddy has pockets in her skirt that are deep enough to hold a decent size holy symbol without unsightly bulges. Proof that there is divine intervention.

Also, Turn Undead has a limited duration better find Maddy a weapon soon.

      Everyone sing with Maddie:
“To everything , turn, turn, turn!
There is a season , turn, turn, turn!
And a time for every purpose under heaven!”

That depends on what she actually did. The panel seems to show light emanating from her. If she combined Turn Undead with Holy Nimbus, she could have caused enough damage to actually destroy many of the weaker ones. These undead all seem to be pretty low level.

We visibly see undead running away in the third panel, so they weren’t all destroyed. It’s possible that some of them were, but there’s nothing in the art that would indicate this (no piles of ashes or anything).
