Dorilys can apparently manipulate the probabilities that underlie the basic quantum structure of the universe. Trying to do this without understanding the basic mechanisms involved could result in the dissolution of the entire universe as we know it.

She also seems to have super strength; she is hoisting our favorite Blackguard off the floor with little or no effort, despite the fact that, with armor included, he has to be weighing in at 300+ Lbs.

All the more reason why it’s important for her to maintain her vow of doing no harm. She’s strong enough that she could really hurt someone if she wanted to.

Again, Derek’s vow, NOT hers: http://rustyandco.com/comic/level-8-40/

Plus, again, in addition to the other various “harm”s she caused here – http://rustyandco.com/comic/level-8-70/ – I draw attention once more to the spike embedded in the guy’s skull!

Not embedded. You can see him quite clearly in the mess after Mimic’s little trick, and it’s not in his head. So a glancing blow at most.

    • Nerva
      March 23, 2017, 3:48 am | # | Reply

Nothing a modified 15-20 on a Strength check couldn’t let her pull off. It’s quite possible for a human to have 20 in Strength if they’re high enough level, which would give them a +5 modifier.

Malevolus is both poisoned (likely suffering Strength and Dexterity penalties from the looks of him) and not resisting, so it’s not even an opposed check – it’s quite possible that Dorilys can just take 10 on it and still be able to manhandle the ailing blackguard.

Well part of that is the hold she has on him: He’d be willing to do quite a bit of the work of lifting himself up to prevent his arm being broken or dislocated. (Especially as he’s definitively ‘beaten’ at the moment.)

He ASKED to be arrested. If he weren’t under the influence of poison, he’d probably be walking. Certainly he’s helping as much as he can.

Is anyone else still unclear on how coming back from the dead is meant to have broken Maddie, BTW? Apart from one instance of tripping while carrying far too much shopping (and she was fantasising on going on a shopping spree in her first appearance), the rest seems as attributable to being around her crush as anything.

Dorilys herself is kinda hinting at it: http://rustyandco.com/comic/level-8-39/
I fear that a mere “crush” on Derek wouldn´t justify such a rather violent reaction…

        March 23, 2017, 2:04 pm | # | Reply

That’s kinda what I mean – we’re told quite… forcefully… that she’s broken in some way, but not really shown anything when she was on-panel to justify that sort of reaction.

          March 23, 2017, 3:36 pm | # | Reply

Omitting it probably out of pity, and thank you for that; seeing Maddie “broken” – that would hurt! Leaving it to imagination is bad enough…

Most fantasy RPG resurrections come at a cost to the one being brought back. The standard penalty is you come back a level or two lower than when your character died, though some games will give you permanent stat penalties, or a new disadvantage. The general idea is that your soul leaving its body for what would normally be forever and then getting recalled into it again is highly traumatic to your whole system.

I’m guessing that she died and …didn’t meet God. Or her god. That’s gotta be a one-way trip to atheism if anything, which would result in de-paladinification.

    • Mary
      March 25, 2017, 10:41 am | # | Reply

      Yes, it’s still unclear.

Perhaps it’s just the knowledge that she failed. Got herself killed. Was not in a position to protect the people she set out to protect.

Maddie before death was cheerful, outgoing, confident, and graceful–she strode fearlessly into danger, and could trident-fu girrallons on a high wire over lava with her eyes closed. Maddie post-resurrection is subdued, shy, diffident, and clumsy. We may not know what exactly is wrong, but there has definitely been a change and not for the better.

      I think it’s pretty clear how she’s broken: http://rustyandco.com/comic/level-8-43/

Pre-death Maddie would have put herself between the hammer and Mimic, warned hammertime-troll off, and if he didn’t comply, would have given him a righteous smackdown. “It’s what paladins DO.” 😉

Post-death Maddie is standing to one side and figuratively wringing her hands. Something’s definitely amiss. Other than, y’know, dying and the traumatic way in which she died, we don’t have any specific answers as to WHY she’s taken a turn for the passive, but I think it’s clear that she has. And the manner of her breakage means the end of her career as a paladin unless it’s fixed. Then again, she could always join Derek and become a Cleric.

Personally, though, I hope we get to see Righteous Smackdown Madeline again. 🙂

If I had a way to deliver in the event of failure, I would wager a small sum that the reason Maddie came back broken is because she isn’t so much ‘broken’ as ‘incomplete’ – remember, anti-Madeline was originally part of her. The, for lack of a better term, ‘space’ of anti-Maddie was still part of Maddie until her death, but when she got pulled back, since anti-Maddie wasn’t part of the mix, that particular ‘space’ got filled in with something else.

Of course, I could easily be completely wrong.

    I LOVE Panel Two!
What is she doing? Beginning to angrily conduct a symphony? Trying not to angrily lecture someone? Preparing to use her Stooge-Fu on someone?

If I wasn’t committed to being a Jack Ass (Okay, you can leave out “committed to being”), totally an avatar picture for me.

      I think it’s:
      Panel 1) Scared/astonished
Panel 2) Reminding herself “I’m a badass, not a scared little ingénue GIRL”
Panel 3) Angry Mask back in place.

No, they focus their anger into a razor sharp edge. What hits more?

        I read it as
        1) Surprise someone other than her triggered her feat
        2) Realizing how much more dangerous that makes her
        3) Making it absolutely clear how unacceptable a repetition of that trick is.

I’m unclear on why she’s so upset, I thought he just used his blindsense to tell okay left arm up not the bad guy but her reaction seems to hint that there’s more to it then that.

I think that she needs to be judicious in the use of that power, and since it came as a surprise to her, she didn’t have a chance to judge whether it was a good idea.
