While I love Dorilys’ predilection for indirect approaches, I do wish it resulted in less bystander pain. Oof. I wince for that poor guy getting hit with the pith helmet and the lady getting cracked in the knee with the sledge.

At least the lady looks less like her knee was “cracked” and more like the maul hit her just right to make her knee buck with no damage.

But yeah, pith helmet guy? Ouch!

This is a pith helmet for anyone not sure: http://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/161369372652-0-1/s-l1000.jpg

That helmet looks more like a WW1 German helmet.

Uhm.. since Pedantry is my avocation…

There is no pith helmet there – pith helmets are made of plant-based material covered in cloth, and while rigid, they are pretty light and rarely feature spikes atop.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pith_helmet
What we’ve got there falling from the third guy from the left is clearly a helmet made of metal, looking mostly like a Phrygian / Thracian helmet with the nasal, without the usual cheekpieces, but with the spikes occasionally found atop Germanic and Celtic helms.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phrygian_helmet

In a fantasy setting, I’d tend to associate this kind of spiked helm with dwarves or maybe orcs.
I’m blaming a spell checker with a wild sense of humor.

Confirmed: Dorilys has some sort of Misfortune-Fu as a class feature. Even a maxed-out Halfling Luckstealer couldn’t have caused this much of a chain-reaction on command. It’s clear that she knew exactly how her move with the feather would turn out; I can only assume she’s some sort of Destiny-cleric, with an OP feat known as “Determinism”.

Is the sledgehammer guy in the middle of panel 3 a Goliath? He really looks like one to me. (Legally, of course, the answer is “no”…but for actual human beings, c’mon, it’s pretty obvious.)

Anyone but me rather curious what “civilized beings don’t” was going to end up being?

I believe this is the same lady who was complaining about our resident barbarian earlier (which helped inspire his rage), and that his exit has given her ‘justification’ for her prejudice: “Civilized beings don’t make holes in walls”, or something to that effect.

Probably not that much Con, actually… Pallys and Blackguards had so many stats they needed high, that Con usually ranked 3rd or 4th, with only Dex and Int guaranteed to be lower (and man that guy doesn’t seem to have good Dex and Int).

He has excellent Intelligence. He’s just a bit selective about what he applies it to. He did manage to escape Cube and Rusty by the simple expedient of bribing them with knowledge.

I know exactly where my AD&D books are, but I’m too lazy to excavate them. Or were you referring to the boxed set Basic D&D that preceded AD&D? I remember my very first character was a fighter with 1 hp, back then your character died at 0. Yet somehow he lived long enough to retire at max level for an elf…

Ok, so I was joking last strip about “unfortunate accidents” being her favoured weapon… apparently that wasn’t actually a joke. Perhaps she’s under some kind of unusual oath, the way old-school clerics couldn’t use bladed weapons… or the way Maddy favours gardening implements…

Cleric, hell. That level of probability manipulation is damn near avatar-level (or plot convenience, almost the same difference). Watching the haughty elf spill her drink was pretty satisfying, though.

He stabbed his own arm? What kind of armor is he wearing? Cardboard?

    • St Fan
      February 23, 2017, 9:02 pm | # | Reply

The dagger seems to have struck right at the elbow junction between the two pieces of armor on his arm. Which is exactly the kind of weak spot you’d seek to trump armor.

This, again, demonstrates a level of probability manipulation that’s through the roof.
