Not like Rusty to waste a perfectly good iron core.

Maybe this metal tastes bad. Either that or he was not eating everything in order to do more damage.

Rusty wasn’t led by the nose! He was led by the other end!

Is the yellow stuff supposed to be rust? Or is it the actual metal core of the cannon showing though?

He’s eaten pretty much the entire rear end of the cannon – the rust is lining the hole, through which you can see the interior. The bug doesn’t mess around when there’s a meal to be had.

the yellow looks to be a grinning mouth and mustache painted on the front of the cannon making the barrel the cannon’s nose

In panel 5 Rusty looks very much like a puppy who is about to steal the last slice of pizza. 😛

How would the cannon fire with the back eaten? Its driving me nuts.

Well, for it to be an effective cannon design, capable of holding the cannon ball in the barrel, there must’ve been more to it than what was pictured within the larger sphere. Weakened by rust and partially eaten, the remains of that additional metal work could get blasted backwards while still providing just enough structure to direct enough impact forward to push the remains of the cannon ball out the nose. Or maybe it’s just a cartoony comic moment.

Also, the hot gasses appear to have left the barrel before the remains of the cannonball.

The cannon didn’t fire. The propellant went off, then Rusty shoved the mostly-eaten cannonball core out the barrel.

Rusty may not look it, but he’s a seasoned webcomic professional. He’ll go the distance for a good sight gag.

He missed his chance to say “Boom, headshot!” You know, because it’s a face that shoots and… I’ll see myself out.
