That was more of a successful Intimidate check than incapacitating the Derro, IMO. Making an enemy decide not to fight you is always a good idea, especially if you can do it with panache. And nothing says panache like firing a rhinoceros out of a cannon. 😀
Sadly, that cannon is powered by a Tan Bag of Tricks, and Griffin is not an option. Further the animal chosen is random – it could be a rhino, a brown bear, a warhorse, a lion, or a tiger.
Shame she didn’t get a tiger or lion. It would have landed on its feet, and then probably proceeded to maul Boots.
This is because Stabs had the good sense to let the animal deploy before it hit the target. Much as I love Roy Greenhilt, understanding how to best use magic items isn’t exactly his strongest skill.
Based on the Rhino Cannon’s performance, it would likely be reasonable to say that there’s a house rule that magic items can me modified if you, say, roll a high enough arcana check(likely to allow that “magic missile” way back in level 3, but still). And thus, the bags of trick behind the ammo(at least for the rhino cannon, the badger gun was kinda McGyvered and didn’t have anything locking the bag of tricks into a single source of ammo) might have had, in its water detecting enchantment, an ammo-lock clause thing.
But hey, it’s just a *hit by elephant from bazooka*
Wait, so if Stabs could somehow ditch all her daggers she’s be back on the ground… but up there she can rain animals on any villain who comes in her sights… nothing says Sneak Attack like a giant animal to the face.

Also, holy crap. There’s no way that Stabs has Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Animal Cannon, *and* she’s firing in disadvantageous conditions, so that shot (even though it missed) was still a pretty incredible roll. Seriously, that shot would’ve landed with devastating results were it not for Boot’s dodge bonus to AC.
Like you said, Stabs missed. But it was a pretty effective warning shot.
Also, for those who want to examine that shot using different editions:
In 4E, Stabs would not have been able to use the cannon’s weapon proficiency bonus, would have had a -5 penalty for range and would have lacked Combat Advantage.
In 5E/Next, Stabs would have lacked her proficiency bonus to the attack roll (unless Bag of Tricks-Cannons are considered Simple Weapons, which I doubt) and would have had Disadvantage on the attack roll.
No matter the edition, Stabs was gonna miss with that rhino, but still freak out the Derro. 😀

Under 2nd Edition a natural 20 is always a critical hit.
Under 3rd edition/3.5/PF, a natural 20 is always a hit, with a chance to confirm the critical, no matter what, as well.
Well, like the saying goes “Crits happen”. 😀
Also, crits were optional in 2E. Unless you were using the Player’s Options rules. :p
