Oh, this is going to be good!

    A nod to South Park?

The alt-text is a nod to “South Park”; the “Chewbacca Technique” is no doubt a reference to “Star Wars”, where Han and Luke (disguised as Imperial Stormtroopers) bring Chewbacca (who is wearing binders) to the detention center. It could also be a reference to “Return of the Jedi”, where Princess Leia (wearing armor from a dead Ubese bounty hunter) drags Chewbacca in chains before Jabba the Hutt, who tosses Chewie into his dungeon. This allows Leia to be in position to revive Han Solo.

I imagine that Stabs will be disguised as a Duergar, and one of the taller members of the group will be “Chewie”. It’ll probably be Roxy, since she has dealt with the Gnolls before. Maddie is a bad choice, since she doesn’t do well with plans involving subterfuge, and Intelligence is her dump stat. 😀

Roxy and Prestige may be able to disguise themselves– Disguise Self and Alter Self are both on the Bard and Wizard lists. They could bring both Madeline and Rusty as “prisoners”. If they gag Madeline, she can’t even say anything to ruin the plan.

All of which means it’s practically guaranteed to be Maddy as one of the guards, and probably Stabs as the prisoner.

I can see where this is going.

    Also, “Twicelings”, LOL.

its not an insult, its an accurate description of those freakishly tall people.
You have normal people (halflings, gnomes, dwarves, etc) and freakishly tall twicelings.

what, you think dwarves and halflings actually call themselves those names?

They’re going to pretend one of them is a prisoner and disguise the other three as derros ? I guess it could work if either Roxy or Prestie has illusion spells.

And it would give Mimic the opportunity to say “Aren’t you a little tall for a derro dwarf ?”

But…. but that didn’t actually work! They ended up having to fight them all anyway!
    …
    Maybe that’s the plan?

      No, that’s the plot.

As a rule, if they explain what they are trying to do, it WILL go wrong. Otherwise explaining it would be redundant.

OTOH, if they don’t explain it, it may still go wrong.

Hrmm… I’m not sure this will work for them. Any attempts at subterfuge may be stymied by Maddie’s oath to be Truthful… which would then lead to mass violence by said Paladin providing an ample distraction by which the others can rescue them… hmm… maybe it’s crazy enough to work after all.

As when chasing Plaidbeard — have Maddie swing into action on the signal.

well, Twicelings is totally an insult my Halfling characters are going to use from now on! 😀

I think Roxy and Prestige’s plan will be more akin to the plan to rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt in “RotJ”, rather than Luke and Han’s impromptu plan to sneak Princess Leia out of the Death Star’s detention center in “Star Wars”.

Prestige casts Alter Self to disguise herself as a Duergar. Roxy and Rusty are tied up, and Prestige brings them to the circus. In the meantime, Stabs sneaks in through the back, looking for Mimic and Cube. Then Maddy waits until there’s a Fireball, and at that point she comes charging to the rescue. That’s the “Chewbacca Technique”!

In this situation I’d probably go for the full frontal assault, myself. It’s often the least suspected tactic and, let’s face it, by now they know there’s a trap and the enemy is definitely expecting them to sneak in.

Hostage situation. Remember they don’t know they’re wanted for delivery.

Besides, this is how they rescued Robespierre. It worked!

My issue is they’re going after Derro. Derro are WAY sneakier than they are, and they know there’s gnolls involved. That’s going to make sneaking virtually impossible.

All of this planning by our heroes doesn’t take Grinner’s dangerous genre savviness. We’ve already seen him make backup plans to the backup plans and multiple Batman Gambits. The girls seem to be playing into Grinner’s hands at the moment.

But then, our floating guy gave them a little tip to not do what they’re best at doing (a wizard who melees, a rogue that casts spells). Perhaps also, a paladin that thinks and not fights? Now that would be interesting.

The Chewbacca Technique has never worked. Unless they are counting on it not working….Either way I am sensing a disturbance in the Force. the future is going to get very interesting, but not exactly in a good way.

The Chewbacca Technique has a tendency to quickly evolve into the Indy Ploy.

P..S. Guess who’s getting to play Chewbacca? Hint: not one of the twicelings…

Why only Duergar and no Drow??? They’re under ground, so a Drow exploration group could conceivably stumble over the circus with a ‘dward’ slave for sell. Altering size can be tricky, so keep it simple.

I admit I’m rusty on my lore, but aren’t derro basically the idiots of the dwarf clan? They could distract them with something shiny!

They’ve gotta be used to that by now. The entire circus is shiny!
