It looks more like Zatoichi to me, or whoever that guy was with the kid.

In which I follow up to myself: I’m thinking of the TV series “Lone Wolf and Cub”: , about Ogami Itt? and his son.

Guys. Baby cart. Sword. It’s Ogami Itto.

I think he’s disguised as a samurai — or ronin.

It took me a while to realize what I was looking at, what with the cube and the hat…

    Also: I love this page.

I didn’t actually realize it was Cube, or any actual creature for that matter, until I started reading the comments.

Lack of pattern recognition will get me eaten one day…

Ah. So Cube is a Monk Cube? Waitaminute. He’s married, right? Oh, on second thought, I recall a lame-o take-off kung-fu series pushing QC Cain’s “son”. Nevermind.

Still, LMFAO at Lone Cube & trunk (& buggy)

Cube is always a snappy dresser.

While Zatoichi definitely predates Lone Wolf and Cub by a couple of decades (and was in the film not manga arena), this is definitely not a Zatoichi homage any more than Lone Wolf and Cub were. The first blending of those two properties I believe was done by Stan Sakai in his Usagi Yojimbo comic series. His was of course Lone Goat and Kid, and his Zatoino (blind swordspig) characters. My vote for a title on this piece would be: Lone Cube and Rust.

    I hope this helps.

now to find out what shinnanigans the guys are gonna be up to (and who the special guest star is).

I am a huge Lone Wolf & Cub fan. When I saw this Level opening, I just about bust my gut laughing.

If adventurer Gel Cube is kickass, Lone Cube should be absolutely epic. Itto Ogami killed off entire _battalions_ (and they usually attacked _him_).

“What have here?” asks the fishy looking creature? Yeah, looking at what’s coming down the road, that’s a *really* good question. It’s certainly one of the weirder things I’ve seen in my days of adventuring…

I don’t know about all the film/anime references, but my first thought on looking at this was ;Hey, are we going to get some Bullywugs?’ Or am I alone in the 1st edition Fiend Folio love here?

      January 5, 2012, 1:10 pm | # | Reply

Yeah, I think they’re frog-people (bullywugs, boggards or grung) because frog people are 43% funnier than lizard people and 8% funnier than fish people.

As for loving the early stuff… I’ve converted about 10 of those old modules for play in more recent editions. The mechanics of the game have vastly improved, but nobody has ever quite matched the early modules for sheer audacity in storytelling.

Y’know, this didn’t bug me when I first saw this page, but as the story goes on I find myself wondering more and more: How, exactly, does Cube’s chinstrap work? I mean, setting aside the fact that it isn’t dissolving, exactly what function is it supposed to perform? Think about it…

To look cool. The most vital function of all
