Huh. I see a certain basic problem in this: namely that if any of the fearless foursome coming to stop this get in its sights, they will no longer want to stop it.

Or else — can anyone imagine a clever Madeline? shudder

It would be frightening if she also became super-evil.

Though I suppose the relic is not always active or it would also affect its owners.

You’re saying this in spite of hipster vampires. It may have already done it and they don’t realise.

True, but the yuan-tis clearly had a way to avoid being affected by the relic when they used it.

It’s a relic of chaos. So potentially anything goes. It might simply be that Yuan-Tis who use it can’t be affected whilst anyone else who isn’t a Yuan-Ti is susceptible to the effects.

You say that as if it wasn’t in vampires’ nature to be hipsters. It’s perfect, really…they live forever, so everything bores them.

Nah. They might be evil creatures, but I figure Maddy is too good-hearted. She’ll want to help them…

Not if her nature was reversed.

The problem here stems from the fact that this relic of chaos is itself random in what portion of one’s essential characteristics it reverses. The bugbear comedian is a testament to the fact that the device did not decide that since the BB was capable of speech it would now be mute (or create “anti-language” which negates normal language like antimatter), nor does he seem incapable of locomotion, yet before he was capable of walking.

This “chaos weapon” is itself something of a crap shoot; since there is no guarantee that it would be her morale compass that was reversed I do not think using the weapon on Maddie would be all that smart. Do we even know factors into the “decision” behind what qualities the device reverses? It could “decide” to make her a super genius but physically weak leaving intact her base personality and moral inclinations.

With her intuitions on how to best overcome physical challenges combined with super genius level intellect; I wouldn’t want anything to do with her as an obstacle. She’d just MacGuyver her way out of every situation.

If you aren’t already, you need to be a DM sometime.

Considering how the Yuon Ti are shown using it in the page, it suggests some amount of control on the part of the user, else it would not be effective as a weapon.
That said, it could just be played for funny, this is a webcomic.

What bugbear ISN’T fond of surprise attacks?
(First the Mr. Rogers reference, now the Muppet Show. I surmise that the next twist will be… a rain of ping-pong balls on some hapless straight-man.)

Does anybody else notice the parallel between this and the last Maddy level? Namely the theme of relics that do world-changing things?

No wonder a couple of hipsters wanted it.

I mean, unless they’re being affected too. Vampires are pretty clichéd.

Ooo, hey, I feel it working … I’m starting to feel like a hipster with pretend-shus ideas (or is that dipster?)

We have now entered the VeePee (vampire pair) Playhouse

Well, that explains why a pair of hipsters would want it.

I sure hope the gorgon pizzeria owner gets to stay how he is though…

Agreed on Gordie – he just seems so HAPPY as a pizzaria owner.

Before it was said that they were vampires, I thought the two hipsters were dark elves. You know, because they’re underground.

In any event, I’d be sad to see Maddy turn evil and cold-hearted (if that were to happen), but I’m sure if she does, there’d be an arch that saves her from that fate.

Beginning to like this Yuan Ti. Kinda cute for someone that’s green.
Also, I wonder if it bothers her that she doesn’t/can’t wear pants? 😛

Despite the “wotsie bear” alt-text, the cast page calls this a Hobgoblin.
