Guess we know where Madeline got that hoe from…

Darn. My exact first thought too. But I’ll take that shield of stopping and extra large size of that coat of holding (is there a vest version?)

Um, and is he currently selling to squids?

Well, Maddy did say it was a gnome who sold her the hoe. So yeah, we can probably assume it’s the same guy…

He wears a fez now. Fezzes are cool.

Too bad it’s not a bowtie. I wonder which regeneration this is.

I’m sorry, but just because Mat Smith does something does not make that thing “cool.” He’s the second-least-cool incarnation of The Doctor ever, and only beats out Paul McGann by a very slim margin.

Bow ties are cool, but mostly because of Jon Pertwee and Opus the Penguin.

Hey now, I think he does alright. Not as good as David Tennet, but then again, who is? It would be hard to see him doing some of the more serious dramatic stuff that David did so well though.

I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear all of you over the sound of your misspelling of “Tom Baker is the best Doctor”.

Though, yes, Jon Pertwee is right there next to him…

That Shield of Stopping definitely needs to be created! I only wish I had thought of it first.

I dunno… A stop sign might actually make a pretty good shield.
If he’d sell that jacket, though, I’m sure he could make a profit…

Maul of the Titans = Erfworld reference?

    • Sofa Spud

Not sure about Erfworld, as to whether you’re referring to the name or appearance of that item, but the first reference I have for that item’s name is the Advanced D&D Dungeon Masters Guide [sic] (1979 – TSR Games), page 150 (about halfway down the first column of the page).

That one specifically is a reference to the webcomic Shortpacked, where a female* character named Amber hits people with a toy corn popper.

*or a sheila, if you’re an aussie or a gnome.

That looks more like a +2 Trident to me. That cobber doesn’t know what he’s selling! Quick, hoodwink him!

And that mithril arrow will never be fired if Rusty smells that.

      I count 9 points, so it’s like three tridents! Or maybe a +6 single…

+7 even, I think, looks like ten points to me.

Gnome Illusionist with crappy junk…all mundane items to sell to dumb adventurers without a detect magic spell. Only real magic item is his coat. As noted.. Maul of Titans is from 1st edition AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide. I wonder if he has anyting that works for sale?

Remember the Rolemaster critical hit, “Blast annihilates entire skeleton. Reduced to a gelatinous pulp. Try a spatula?” Well, there’s the spatula.

Funny, didn’t know Heward got into apparel as well as traveling gear. Logical extension of the Handy Haversack, tho. Might have to use that with a fast-talking street vendor sometime. 🙂

I’m not sure if it’s his Fancy Clothes and Very Fine Hat, his fundamental dishonesty, or something about his facial features, but this gnome reminds me of Badger. (Sorry, I mean Badger the criminal from -Firefly.-, not the badger that flew out of a funnel a couple strips ago.)

It’s a Nonadent, not a Trident! I would like that jacket, though, or an equivalent one with style more towards my personal taste, if it came in my size…

I get the feeling we’ve learned where the “Hoe”ly Avenger came from.

Hmm. A street trader with a line in patter selling items of dodgy provenance. Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler, perhaps? (The Mimic: a box on legs with a fighting streak….)

+2 Shield of Stopping: moderately resistant to Fire and Acid. Great at reflecting light (little else is reflected), can be used to signal other players or foes. Grants bearer +1 on saving rolls involving time, with an additional +1 for every other level of enchantment. Also improves temporal-distortion based skills and prolongs buffs by the same amount. Can be affixed to another shield (position does not matter) to gain the Time based bonuses, but grants no physical defensive bonuses, and only 25% of the original elemental bonuses. Also loses reflective bonuses.

I’ve re-read this comic at least 4 times over the years (I think this is re-read #5 but it could be 6). Only now do I get the “Does that jacket come in Medium?” joke. Ugggggh…. *slow clap*
