You should read the author’s commentary for Fritz Leiber’s “The Jewel of the Forest” which is about raiding an enchanted tower for the treasure it contains, and it turns out that the tower is animated and tries to squash down the thieves in pretty much the same way that the castle golem attacks with its towers here.
Has anyone else every played the pinball game Medieval Madness???? It suddenly hit me that this castle looks almost like the castle you have to destroy in the game.
