I think it’s a bit late in the year for a “Spooky Scary Skeletons” homage. Plus I don’t think that’s on theme for – oh, wait, dogs stereotypically love bones. So it might be tangentially on theme. All the same, Rib Cage seems like a far more fitting candidate to employ that trope.

      Dogtown has Chekov’s Gun in a shoulder-holster.
I don’t know if he’ll be escaping later or if Presti will loot it now but I’m sure we’ll be seeing Act Two during later (Paradoxically, during Act Three)

Roxy does a damned convincing Princess here. She’s really getting into her role

Well, except for the sweat bead on her face in the 7th panel. But she’s doing a good job anyway.

Keeping up the appearance of Her Highness’ smoking habit is probably hard on her voice, though. The things people do, to commit to a role…

Then again, Roxy was already a smoker.

Four derro caught; magma golems destroyed; malevolent duke scared off. That leaves Dr Grawlf, Whitey, and the rest of the fungus infestation, … and the Viscount, who can’t be defeated at this point, but can be delayed until some later episode.

Yup. The plan worked, but it was only to contain the hat.

        A start, therefore.

    “Plan the defense”. Progress?

“Root out the spy”. Not any visible progress as yet.

    Act two, after all?

The fact that a dozen guards just went missing will probably point them the right way.

That’s what, 3 level 4 ice storm spells so far? (Plus a shield or armor spell of unknown level, plus an illusion of unknown level?)

Burning those top-level spells pretty quickly, eh? Especially using an AoE on one guy!

They already rooted out today’s bullywug attack. By the law of random encounters, there shouldn’t be any more before she goes to bed. She has all these Ice Storms prepared, it would be a shame to let them go to waste.

The thing about encounters? They’re only random if there’s no reason for them to happen.

She’s saving the fireballs, like the first time.

Anyway, she knows the Rule of Funny decrees that if it’s funny for her to have no spells, she will have none. Might as well put them to use.

It’s a smart move because sneaky assailants (as well as Derro) by D&D rules are likely to be rogues, meaning they have the Evasion ability, meaning have a good chance of taking zero damage from any spell with a reflex saving throw, such as Fireball. The Ice Storm spell does not have this weakness.

The Shield spell is first level, as is a visual-only illusion (the spell Silent Image). If Presti is seventh level, then she’d be out of 4th-level (and higher) spells at this point; but she could be higher level.

Depending on her INT bonus she might have a few left, she’s kind of cranky but still a pretty sharp cookie with a chip on her shoulder 😉

Something’s gone wrong with the flow of time. Normally, you go “act two” after you catch a cold.

I do wonder why Presti didn’t use this spell in the first place; there’s nothing about holding a dog-summoning hat that would have made the derro immune to Ice Storm spells.

He’s temporarily disarmed and disoriented from the explosion; I’m not super current on D&D rules, but that sounds like a significant circumstance penalty to, basically, everything, which would give the spell a better chance of success. Also, frozen as-is, you reduce the chance of him blasting out of the ice with ballistic poodles, or the possibility that Dog Town could be frozen but the hat’s mouth still unblocked and set to automatic.

I do that all the time in D&D Campaigns. I would have wanted to see Act 2, just to find out what it was.

All the time my party’s like, “We need to stop the supervillain before he activates his secret weapon!” and I’m like, “Wait, I want to see what this thing does.”
