At least she found a way to properly disguise her hat this time. Kind of disguise it. Eh, close enough!

It was not obvious in the first glance. Improvement!

I love that the torture devices include a fancy lobster-cracker and life preserver. I wonder how many fish-men were sent “sleeping with the birdies”.

    Woo! 😀

Now the question is, why is she smiling? She doesn’t smile. Not that I remember, anyway.

Could it be that she likes this more than being royalty?

That doesn’t look like a smile to me. More like the expression you get when you twist your mouth to the side because you’re displeased (can’t think of a name for it).

        A grimace, perhaps…?

Grimace, maybe, although I usually think of that as showing teeth. Sneer implies contempt, and I don’t really see that in this case.

This is the closest match I can find to the expression I’m thinking of:

        The McKayla Maroney?

She did smile at the end of the very first level.

      https://rustyandco.com/comic/level-1-39/

This one looks like more of a wry, tired grin, which Mimic seems to be sharing. At this point, the two of them have an “old friends” vibe going, which we also saw back in Level 8.

Ah, you’re right, she did smile way back then. I guess I’m just not used to seeing it since. It seems meaningful in this context.

I love the double meaning in the Tweet announcing this comic: “Vacation’s over”.

She usually just looks gruff/hungover/annoyed. Here, she looks rather worldweary. Most interesting.

Can’t wait to see how this goes!

      It is noir.

Considering it is noir, the fact that she hasn’t had a smoke or a beer in 5 strips is surprising. Is this really Princess?

Hmm…a double disguise? Now that would be interesting.

So when I said the Captain’s pose looked a bit like Princess, I thought saying “I bet this guy is Princess in disguise” would make me look really dumb.

    Silly me eh?

I guess it figures that Mimic would see through the disguise, seeing as he doesn’t rely on seeing.

” ‘You’re a damn good man, sister,’ he said “.

I, too, was foiled by her “lack of hip”.

Well, it looks like the Princess was Ruffenuff. But thankfully, not too ruff.

Now that we know Ruffenuff is actually Princess in disguise, which is presumably a good thing, the question is begged: Who is the real villain of this story? Signs point to Plaidbeard being involved, what with the railship and a dwarf named Tarta (you know, like Tartan, the material out of which Scottish kilts are often made and which feature PLAID designs?) looking for her father. Plus the whole fact he was the one who nicked the Belt of Genre-Changing back in Level 2.

I thought that would be Princess, but after using the belt of genre-changing (hence the lack of curves). Maybe her disguising skills are just too good.

Remember, it’s not a belt of gender changing.

Curvaceous women are totally in-genre for noir.

No Princess, Wellenuff is the captain of the Black Market on the south side.

I spent so long telling people that there’s no way you’d do something as so blindingly obvious as make Nuff the Princess. This is the first time I’ve been so disappointed by this comic.

It’s okay, we all have creative flops now and then.

Using a genre trope in a story arc *specifically* about genre tropes?!

Interesting way to excuse a lazy/obvious plot turn.

It’s okay, there’s no need to get defensive. As I’ve said, we all have creative flops now and then. I have no doubt things will go back to their normal high quality.
