I think we just got another one of those little details that the author will turn into a great payoff later.
(Roxy’s constant whittling in ch 3, the “trident of warning”)
Maddie’s “smell evil” has been a running joke for a while, but it never occurred to me that it was more than a fun presentation of a paladin class feature.
Now she’s trying to track a (non-evil) rust monster through a hotel, by smell, and taking it for granted that this is a thing she can do.
I am very curious to see if/how this ties into the “prodigal daughter” discussion from 8-191. Or her favored fighting style, for that matter.
A thought occurs to me about that whole “prodigal daughter” bit: We’re all assuming Maddie has some kind of connection to those demon things from the end of Level 8, but let us not forget that her much lesser evil side, Anti-Maddie, is running around out there as well. We know for a fact that evil can be pulled out of you as it happened in Level 6. So, who’s to say this hasn’t happened to Madeline before? Only, what if she originally had a LOT more evil in her? And what if Anti-Maddie finds that evil and absorbs it?

Rusty got a bad run on the dice, didn’t he?
Eat dice?
Come on Maddie, you say that like this place makes any scents. Seems pretty non-scents to me.
Trap or bait?
Calling it now, they’re playing battleship
Either that or Blackjack!
Or with a Pinata
Or harmless-practice of that ONE sport Rusty is known for and has fans for…?
Or Rusty as umpire in the game … 🙂
Or rusty is taunting
The comic readers can’t hear Rusty’s tone of voice, but Madeline should…
She should, but she may not EVALUATE the tone properly.
Guessing that Rusty is shouting in defense of the worker drone ant.
Maddie would be delighted to help there, too

What connection? I though she remembered something about being dead.
I wonder if she’s tracking him by sniffing for Good!
Paladins rush in where angels fear to tread!
well, well, well
The lunchbox might actually contain the artifact, but the one bearing it looks like one of the workers.
Is it going to turn out he’s playing blackjack?
Sounds like they’re playing baseball indoors, and Rusty (possibly still tied up) is the umpire.
I could be wrong.
Is Maddie ‘rushing toward the door’ now?
Maybe she had to find the passage back to the place she was before? Perchance we shall meet the relaxing night man soon…
Well, it sounds like somebody is a No-Hit Wonder.
