While CONTROLUNDEAD might be a good option, I’m pretty sure silent casting is not viable for the speak-and-spell. Since it is not clear whether the artifact or the wielder counts as the caster, I would advise starting with HIDEFROMUNDEAD before delving into more complex spells. Speaking of which, didn’t she already have that spell on a mundane magic item?
What’s more, didn’t the Viscount *somehow* end up with her tribe’s artifact? Depending on the circumstances regarding that change-of-hands (and presuming my memory’s accurate in the first place), the ward may have been transferred with’t.
Hm, she ould try many other useful spells.
Prismatic Sphere would by her more time: nothing gets past a Prismatic Sphere quickly.
That is assuming there is no level-limit; highest level spells we’ve seen are 5th/6th iirc. Wall of stone could work too, in a pinch, I doubt the zombies would be able to climb that. Undeath to Death would wipe the zombies but is useless against he formians.
As for turning Madeline back to normal, wouldn’t Break Enchantment be a better choice? No chance of the subject dying with that one
My bad, I did not consssssssider that.
Still it could be wise to drop some powerful abjurations or hinder enemy movement (Hello Wind Wall, Entanglement, Undeath to Death).
But magic in comics is probably a bit less cheesy than in PnP.
What [sss]spells could YT cast that would NOT require S? “Break enchantment” would work … but not “dispel magic” or “restoration” or any kind of “sphere”. “Protection from undead”?
Well, I was thinking of spells to bring back Maddie, but you’re right, I guess YT could go on the offens[ss]ive with some [ss]spells. C-R-E-E-P-I-N-G-D-O-O-M! G-A-T-E! H-O-L-Y-W-O-R-D!
But those would probably be overpowered for this storyline …
Need to buy time before trying any complex magic. Activate in order.

Defend with evocation magic when needed. Refer to what other people have already mentioned. Plenty of variety for immediate direct damage.
After nullifying any immediate danger, try for more complicated magic. Remember that the power could backfire if not handled correctly. Maintaining mental accuity will be a high priority. Fortunately a higher being will not have difficulty comprehending the intended objective.
M-I-R-A-C-L-E (L9) (hopefully no material component needed) to return Madeline to her normal living condition in her current location with full knowledge of all activity that occurred within human hearing range of her current location.
Hopefully the Speak-N-Spell will parse “ssstone to flesh” properly, by just ignoring the leading S’s. It would be a problem if they were in the middle, but here it might work out.
It just occurred to me that spells cast by the speak-and-spell probably do carry a component cost for the wielder. It would explain why the myrmarch wielding it had all those gems on her thorax. She probably needs them on hand to fuel the artifact. In which case, casting Miracle would be a bad idea, because it has a pretty steep XP cost.
One thing we haven’t considered, caster level on the artefact could be tied to character level or hit dice of the wielder. That would mean it grants casting to non-casters without being drastically overpowered. The myrmarch has 12HD, and stone to flesh is a level 6 spell.
Reminded me of Labyrinths of Echo. Early on, the hero is awed by thought-recording tablets, but then is appalled to find that some people even think with spelling errors.

YT, you’re becoming a self-parody here.
maybe try „turn undead“ firssst, to buy ssssome time.
Capital idea! I ssssee you are a connoisseur.
Actually, better: do a Redcloak. Cast “Control Undead”; Silent casting variant.

Found it.

Good memory! Though it appears she didn’t bring that amulet with her on this trip — presumably she wasn’t expecting zombies.
In spite of being told that there was an artifact of necromancy involved? Poor planning on her part.
Perhaps she lost it. After all, at the end she was able to speak to a vampire, which shows she was seen part of the time.
That’s because she put the Amulet of Invisibility to Undead on the Python to hide it from the vamps…
What’s more, didn’t the Viscount *somehow* end up with her tribe’s artifact? Depending on the circumstances regarding that change-of-hands (and presuming my memory’s accurate in the first place), the ward may have been transferred with’t.
The fact that it has no Ss in it is an advantage.
Some readers called it, that YT would do this! 🙂
Regarding the tooltip text, I think that should be “zombees” 🙂
Perhaps:
“SSSSTOP_ZOMBIESSS”

not ssssure that “prissssmatic ssssphere” will help much here 😉

Incendiary cloud. Earthquake. Chain Lightning. Cone of Cold. Wall of Fire. Lightning bolt. Fireball. Thunderwave.
Then once you’re done with all the fun Evocation spells, you can start getting creative. 🙂

Note that it would be “ssstone to flesssh”
Nanny Ogg could relate. Didn’t she have to send one of her grandkids next door to ask how to stop spelling “banana”?
Nanny Ogg wrote home about the “banananana daiquiris”, Carrot’s father had to send to Magrat to ask how to stop spelling “recommendation”.
The best laid plans of larks and lamia. . . .
Someone refresh my memory, how does YT react to a soft C (i.e. when a C sounds like an S)?
Nevermind. If sssshe exxxxtendssss the ssssound of an exxxx then the ssssoft ccccee issss ssssubject to the ssssame rule.
Snake Girl, it’s time to get your ‘s’ out of there!
Miracle (but not Wish)

Maybe the artifact understands intent?
Nah. That plot hole is too big.
