Let’s mix: one stoned paladin, one lamia with short situational awareness, but holding the key to unstoning the paladin to ‘take hits for her’. Will these gel? Are they immiscible? Will they rise to make cake or will they collapse into a black hole of a souffle? Let’s watch.
If they are corralling her, it seems foolish to corral her to Madeline when they know she has the artifact, if they think she could use it to unpetrify Madeline. And the queen seems sharp enough that she wouldn’t make that mistake on her own. I’m thinking either 1) the queen doesn’t think she can use the artifact to corral Madeline, 2) the queen didn’t specify not to corral her to Madeline, and it’s happenstance that this happened, or (and my personal theory) 3) the workers are intentionally corraling her to Madeline hoping YT will free her. They’ve interacted with our paladin and know she probably wouldn’t hurt them, are scared of the queen and want an out but are too afraid to openly rebel, but they know Madeline is a capable fighter and strong against undead, thus YT freeing Madeline is their own best chance at freedom while maintaining plausible deniability if it doesn’t work
I would assume the queen didn’t specify not to corral her to Madeline and even if she did, the workers wouldn’t be good enough to prevent it. Madeline is probably not far away AND there were no zombies between them.
34) The Matriarch is confident that she can take the artifact back with little effort and thinks stoned YT and stoned Madeline would look nice together.
“Well, they’ll stone Maddie when she’s trying to be so good,
They’ll stone her just like they said they would,
They’ll stone YT when she’s trying to go home,
And they’ll stone her when she’s all alone,
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned…”
A reply that claims one is wrong for commenting, justifies doing it, and then implies a lacking of validity in the original author by claiming seniority. You feeling okay?
Even if she could use the artifact, which there is the question on if she can, does she know spells such as “stone to flesh”? Does she know the artifact caused her to fall to begin with? I don’t get the impression the artifact is sounding out-loud the letters being pressed. Of course, she is capable of playing a snake’s favorite game of hide and sneak. Hopefully, they don’t have a socially awkward chef who only cooks snake meat, as they would have Asp burgers.

Given the circumstances can you really blame her for this particular lapse of situational awareness?
Besides, consider the need for a punchline.
To be entirely fair, her attention was exclusively on the shamblers to the point where she never actually looked at the fountain.

The orders on the previous page were specifically to confine YT to “crowds and open areas” so they are following orders exactly.
They’re zombies. Even if she ordered them to not let them together — she didn’t — would they have the brains to figure out they were doing it?
If one of them did have the brains, the others would eat it.

Except she said that snake tartare is on the menu.
didn’t know paladins can hide in plain sight
She’s subscribed to Drax school of invisibility. In true Madeline fashion, she has succeeded beyond all reasonable expectation.
She avoided capture by using the Mak’tar stealth haze.
She could be a quantum-locked angel (though not presently weeping, AFAICT).
I have to say that Madeline makes a really great statue.

S-t-o-n-e-t-o-F-l-e-s-h
That would require a saving throw or lose COS.
It’s better to break the enchantment with a disjuntion.
(Maybe I’m wrong. I’m old school)

Don’t you mean S-S-S-T-O-N-E-T-O-F-L-E-S-S-S-H?
On that note, she would have an easier time casting Polymorph Any Object.
Strike that. If she has time to think, M-I-R-A-C-L-E is on the table.
Last thing I remember,
I was running for the door…
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
So next will be someone telling her to relax (presumably when they think they have her cornered, and that she is helplesssss)
Madeline is perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

IIRC the artifact’s origins may have ties with her tribe?
I think the device is a “Speak’n’Spell”.
Just a hunch though. ^.^
