Is that some mirrors on the ceiling I see before me!?! Before we know it, they’ll be stabbing the unkillable beast with their steely knives. If its Rusty, he’ll think they were bringing him a nice snack.
Okay, I’m honestly confused as to what the thing of such significance which Tiff is seeing in the mirror on the last panel IS. We’ve seen the zombies behind the matriarch already (including in panel 4), is that meant to be something different?
All I can see it that the Myrmarch is holding the Speak-n-Spell behind her back. It was on the table under a black cloth before she used it, then Tiff fell on that table.
The Speak-n-Spell now has coloured circles floating around it . (Note that the gems on are ovals with black borders, while the floating lights are properly circular and have no borders.)
We’ve seen that light effect a few other times in the hotel but I have no theories about what it means.
We saw the coloured circles:
– accompanying the ZAP both times the Speak-n-Spell was used
– surrounding the pretty, pretty boys who dance in the courtyard
– when Maddie was being offered food
– when the gang were first shown their room
the concrete ceiling holding up all those mirrors under which the Bugqueen and her Zombie Army are standing now has been turned to mud *cue falling glassceilling*
Hypnotic gaze is a classically snakey ability, but I can’t recall ever seeing any sign that Y-T can do that. She is, though, knowledgeable about artifacts, and the Myrmarch tries to cagily keep her speak & spell under cover…so maybe a clear look at the artifact from a different angle has given Y-T an idea of how it can be turned against its holder?
It took me a few tries to realize what I was seeing in Panel_7 …
… & why the angle in Panel_3 mattered …
… the mirror’s reflection shows more than just the Myrmarch, with the Device held behind her.
The minions are huddled closer – closer together & closer to HER than they were in Panel_3 …
… they appear to be … focused … obsessively … upon that Device
Also, is all that her tail? Real rattlesnakes have fairly short tails; is the long coily part just muscle and bone, or does it have organs in it like a real snake’s? I worry.
Her tail varies from strip to strip… it was quite a lot longer when we saw her stretching up the the ceiling to get to the vent she crawled through, whereas it looks notably short here.
Of course, it’s hard to compare a snake-human with either a human or a normal snake. The latter typically has quite a short tail, since most of their length is actually the torso, filled with all those internal organs… when they raise their head, that’s usually just lifting what on a human would be the neck and maybe upper chest. But YT presumably has most of their organs in the human part, meaning that most of her length is probably just muscular tail… and of course, it does need to be long and strong in order to support the weight of an upright torso.
The point to note is it IS an artifact, but it is not the one they are looking for in the quest. If that was the case, then the other two parties would not have their adventures after this one.
Finally finished with an archive binge! Totally worth it.
I voluntarily listened to Hotel California for the first time in a long time just for this comic. You’d think I would have it memorized after hearing it 10,000 times on the radio.

We are all just prisoners here, of our own device…
Why don’t you ask your Speak&Cast what she’s doing here? 😛

I strongly suspect that those coloured circles… are the souls of the guests…
Remember that she does her research. She might know more than has been revealed.
Confused as well.
The only two things I can see with some clarity are all the jewels on the matriarch’s back.
And the mirrors themselves.

Mirrors on the ceiling….
I guess from that angle you can see the prisoners and the device…
I don’t remember, does she have any sight spells (charm, hypnotic gaze, etc.) that could be reflected in a mirror?

They’re NOT minding the tail. She’s a snake with arms, and they’re just holding her arms. If she was just a snake, they’d be holding NOTHING.

Bullseye!

According to https://rustyandco.com/comic/level-9-4/, the three parties are on different missions.
When times are tough, it can sometimes help to stop and reflect.
Ooh, “They stab it with their steely knives, but the just can’t kill the beast”
Could the “beast” be Rusty? It does fit.
Rusty or mr. Cube. Both would be pretty hard to kill by stabbing with steel knives.
I’m reminded of the following exchange.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m just stretching.”
“In the middle of a fight?”
“Yes!”
