Well, depends. If we’re using the pathfinder system, Giant is a subtype inside humanoid, so it would work. If we’re using D&D 3.0 or 3.5, then you would be right.
you can see in the 2nd to last panel Dorilys looking at Maddies’ reaction to Rob preparing to smash a peaceful healer who also happens to be the target of her crush. I don’t think Hold Monster is necessary.
You know what, in the next to last panel Dorilys’s eyes are cast down a little bit. I think that’s her noticing the conveniently placed cake she’s going to deploy in the next strip.
What if…
What if Derek planned this ahead of time to try and get Maddie to snap out of her funk?
The troll isn’t that bad of guy, he’s just playing the role to help out?
Kind of odd that the Troll Captain Rob is settling a score with Mimic, who was taken out of the game, and not . . . I don’t know, “any’ of the players that actually played well.
Although even the trolls would know better than to pick a fight with Cube.
Also if the opposing team captain is off the field is the game over?
Since we don’t actually know how long Mimic was unconscious, it’s possible the game ended while he was out. Rob is attacking Mimic because he’s clearly the most vulnerable of the team. It’s also very possible that the trolls suffered some penalty because Mimic got knocked out by the ball.
Also, now I can’t stop thinking about how badly things will go/have gone for the trolls when Knives gets to bat and score.
1-Maddie stops anything from happening, either by being a badass, or by trying to, failing, and just making the situation too awkward to resume.
2-Divine Intervention. Derek’s God/goddess might decide that attacking a healer is in poor taste, and solve the problem however their godly will decides to solve it.
3-Dereck outclasses Rob so soundly that he can just stand there & the blows bounce off (we’re talking at least a 10 level gap, probably more, plus proper stat allotment)
Derek is at least high enough level for Raise Dead, possibly even high enough to cast Resurrection. That makes him a mid-high level adventurer, certainly strong enough to solo a troll. I can’t wait to see how he resolves this ‘peacefully’.
Where was it said that he was the one who actually raised her? I kinda assumed that he was a similar level to the rest, and a more senior cleric did the actual raising.
Derek is not doing anything, either he’s relying on Maddie, or he took a Sacred Vow to uphold the Peace.
We’ll know which it is when we see either Maddie tearing the Troll into too many parts to regenerate from, or when we see the Troll’s weapon exploding.

This Troll guy best hope that Derek or the green girl takes care of this and not Maddie…
He does NOT have enough class levels to be starting trouble in a temple in front of a named devotee.
Alas, poor Troll Bro. We hardly knew ye.
He totally nailed that pun…
Ah. I was unsure if Rob the Hammer was coming as a random encounter or as a quest giver. Mystery solved, I guess.
Now, “I won’t hurt you, but I won’t let you hurt Mimic”. Um…
**flips quickly through the spell section of PHB**
OK, a half-dozen spells could do it. At least.
Or maybe Derek was going for exact words. “He” won’t hurt Rob…
Waiting to be surprised next update. No pressure.
A physician with great bedside manners and proper sense of duty to patients, BTW.
“It’s Hammer Time!”
Casts Spiritual Weapon…
Hold person, done. That troll doesn’t strike me as possessing a high will save. Gotta love the quiet confidence that Derek has there.
Trolls are of the giant type and thus are not affected by Hold Person. A Hold Monster would do the trick, temporarily at least.
Well, depends. If we’re using the pathfinder system, Giant is a subtype inside humanoid, so it would work. If we’re using D&D 3.0 or 3.5, then you would be right.
How about Sanctuary and standing between the troll and his target, talking, keeping his attention and his focus?
The girl air a snake person. Ok
you can see in the 2nd to last panel Dorilys looking at Maddies’ reaction to Rob preparing to smash a peaceful healer who also happens to be the target of her crush. I don’t think Hold Monster is necessary.
“Piece Together Monster” might be needed later though… even for a Troll
I hope my theory of her losing her killer instinct isn’t true.
That expression is worth a million words, for real.
You know what, in the next to last panel Dorilys’s eyes are cast down a little bit. I think that’s her noticing the conveniently placed cake she’s going to deploy in the next strip.
Thanks Robbie! That’s the perfect way for Madeline to reawaken her badass self.
What if…
What if Derek planned this ahead of time to try and get Maddie to snap out of her funk?
The troll isn’t that bad of guy, he’s just playing the role to help out?
Hold Monster FTW.
Yeah, I think Maddie definitely just got over her resurrection trauma. π
We can hope — and definitely Dorilys is noticing something — but there’s still a lot of possibilities.
We’ll know if Maddie’s eyes are closed in the next strip.
Kind of odd that the Troll Captain Rob is settling a score with Mimic, who was taken out of the game, and not . . . I don’t know, “any’ of the players that actually played well.

What? “Over?” Did you say “Over”? It’s never over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? HELL NO!
“Germans?”
Forget it, he’s rolling.
‘Animal House’ quote.

Mimic isn’t captain, that’s Robespierre.
I’m thinking that Derek might be several *times* higher leveled than everyone else in the room combined.
3 probable outcomes:
1-Maddie stops anything from happening, either by being a badass, or by trying to, failing, and just making the situation too awkward to resume.
2-Divine Intervention. Derek’s God/goddess might decide that attacking a healer is in poor taste, and solve the problem however their godly will decides to solve it.
3-Dereck outclasses Rob so soundly that he can just stand there & the blows bounce off (we’re talking at least a 10 level gap, probably more, plus proper stat allotment)
Anything else will be an entertaining surprise.
My bet is on the Spell “Sanctuary” Being involved in an exhausting humiliation for Rob…. First Level Spell too so Derek’s Guaranteed to have it π
Rob is in for so much hurt that his deity is going to be all “you had that coming, bro,” when he gets to the afterlife…
I’m waiting for the readied Spiritual Guardian to appear… [:P]
Wait a second- could Rob be playing a part here? Taking out the medics seems like an important piece of an assassination plan!
Just waiting for Rob to sport big pants and start shuffle-dancing to “Hammertime”.
That troll has mallet aforethought!
I have to applaud this pun, it’s too good to be overlooked.
Mimic: Now would be a good time to get flippy, Maddie.
Maddie: That’s my secret, Mimic. I’m always flippy.
“I have a hammer.”
“We have a paladin.”
“…and cube?
…smash.”

Two Words.
“Hold Monster”
Derek is not doing anything, either he’s relying on Maddie, or he took a Sacred Vow to uphold the Peace.
We’ll know which it is when we see either Maddie tearing the Troll into too many parts to regenerate from, or when we see the Troll’s weapon exploding.
A pacifist can certainly destroy a weapon.
Peacably : typo? => peaceably
I’m a foreigner, so maybe I’m missing a pun. But the freedictionary recognizes no “peacably”, juste peaceably.
Thanks for the cartoon π
