Well, at least this sorta gives me my answer on if he’s still multi-classed as a beholder with his eye closed still. . . I’m gonna guess not. That or he’s forgotten about it.
There was mention of the rules of gnomish baseball being put up at some point during (or likely post) this arc so Gnomish Baseball could be used in a campaign. REALLY excited for it!
A thought: maybe his eye/awareness of surroundings is dictated by the situation. Every time he’s been fully aware of things (most notably seeing without an open eye) it’s always been during an adventure of some sort (fighting, exploring, setting up an ambush). Heck, even just hanging out at the bar gives him this awareness (being that many great adventures start in a bar, it has residual adventure all over it). This game, however, doesn’t count as adventure for him, so he isn’t able to use his various bonus’, feats, or other abilities that would help him out (though that’s probably all due to his current mindset, not the fact that they’re playing baseball)
An old “Ecology of the Mimic” article on Dragon Magazine stated that mimics see through photoreceptors covering their body. They had, however, not very great range, making mimics rather shortsighted, which usually doesn’t bother them much as they live in cramped dungeons. Interestingly this could perfectly fit here, with the pitcher being outside of Mimic’s range of vision.
Mimics can’t see a baseball (uh..iron ball with spikes) the same way that Roger Rabbit couldn’t have slipped out of handcuffs at just any old time: because of the Rule of Funny.
The distance from the mound to home plate is 60 feet 6 inches. That would explain why he didn’t see the windup. Now, all we need is a reason he failed to see the ball.
Something just occurred to me, so I’m going to say it here (it’s as good here as anywhere else…)
Back in 2016, people were asking about Mimic’s multi-class level in Beholder from Level 1 (see here: )http://rustyandco.com/comic/26/
The problem is that, like the Illithids/Mindflayers from Level 4, (and the Yuan-Ti from 4 & 6,) Beholders are not under the OGL, and thus, that “level” that Mimic took had to be either retrained, or (just as likely/effectively) ret-conned.
(Remember, the entire “Illithit Activities” story arc was allowed to stay only by special permission from WotC, and Tiffany was ret-conned into a Lamia.)
TL/DR: Mimic for “reasons” can not have any levels in “Beholder,” now or ever.

Mimic, you need to form an eye again, you can’t play ball blind!
I must admit. I did not see that one coming.
Neither did he.
Neither did Box!
You notice that Rule of Funny seems to determine whether he can see — he had no difficulty identifying Maddie’s weapon for instance.
Don’t mimics have tremorsense? Maddie was in contact with the ground, thus visible. A thrown ball, though?
Doesn’t explain about the weapon, now does it? 😀
Definitely Rule of Funny.
Which version would that be in? In 3.5, they can see just fine (with darkvision, even)
I think mimics have blindsight
Would’ve been a good time to remember that eye you got back in the 26th strip, Mimic.
Didn’t he re-spec to replace that level of Beholder with something else?
Details, details.
Gotta pay attention to them.
Did we know before this that Mimic was a south paw- er, left-handled?
Yeah, there’s been at least one other that he’s gone lefty, but he might be ambidextrous.
At least he gets to walk now. Unless that rule doesn’t apply in gnomish baseball.
…but walking him to first base as ‘hit batter’, DOES NOT ADVANCE ANYONE ELSE (i.e. ‘whiny halfling’).
Also, given the nature of gnomish baseball, he’s still got to MAKE IT TO first base, past the blades.
While recovering from a concussion and still blind….
Well per normal baseball rules it would advance whiny halfling (or he might use this chance to steal a base).
But without the ball? No scoring!
These halflings would steal a base by preference. Playing to their strong suit.
But remember, this game’s going to go down to the wire. Last inning drama. Can’t go all our guys’ way.
As someone outside the US, baseball rules have never made sense to me…
It’s basically ripped off cricket, but with more stumps to run around. [:P]
Basically. [:P] There’s a lot more nonsense to it than that. [:P]
Baseball is a kindly game, where all you want is to go home safely. Sadly, Mimic has just demonstrated the Gnomish version of a sacrifice…

Gods I still wanna know the rules to gnomish baseball.
…”rules”? What is this strange noise you are make?

That’s neat. I was working under the assumption that Gnomish Baseball was a more violent Calvinball.
I object. Mimic has always been aware of his surroundings before. He didn’t need eyes to dodge when Grinner tried to stab him.
Mimics only have blindsight for a short distance: the ball would be coming in to fast for him to detect it before *pow*.
Okay, that’s a good explanation, actually.
Shock horror. [:P]

Research for the win!
That actually makes a warped kind of sense, given there are some plants that can react to light in a similar manner, albeit much more slowly.
Ah, now we see the flaws inherent in the system.
Thanks for the comic.
I’ve really enjoyed reading it tonight and look forward to more.

So this is closer to the kind of boxing that Mimic might have heard of before, what with the blunt-force trauma…
Well, fair’s fair by Hammer Robby rules. Can’t touch the Cube, so drop the Box.
What happened to his level in Beholder?
didn’t mimic multiclass into beholder in chapter one? so he SHOULD still have an eye right?
I believe he retrained that.
I can’t believe no one mentioned this, but it’s kind of cute how happy/enthusiastic Mimic looks in the first panel. XP
Nitpick! Mimics have Darkvision to 60ft according to the 3.5 SRD…
The distance from the mound to home plate is 60 feet 6 inches. That would explain why he didn’t see the windup. Now, all we need is a reason he failed to see the ball.
It wasn’t dark? (ba dum tsh)
He was told to keep his eye on the ball?
And then…
Mimic took the form of a batting machine.
Something just occurred to me, so I’m going to say it here (it’s as good here as anywhere else…)
