I note, however, that Roxy specially states that it was the bottom of the 9th (end of the game, those not familiar) when they had the bases loaded. So probably not specifically loaded now. Third would be plausible.

So what was Dirk scared of exactly? He clearly had everything completely Under Control. This performance doesn’t match up with his earlier cowardice one bit.
Nah, it fits completely. Before Mimic’s speech, he was having performance anxiety, thinking he couldn’t match what Cube pulled off.
Afterwards, he realized – “Wait a dang minute, I’m a experienced halfling thief who has Hiding, Improved Evasion, Detect Traps, and a gigantic Reflex save. An’ I’d bet dollars to donuts that this troll DOESN’T. I gots me a plan.”
Again, good thing trolls can regenerate.
