That shadow in the last panel looks familiar…
(for those who don’t remember, I’m thinking it’s Drago Stormscale. Check comics 56, 124, and 138 of this level for reference)
So, where is the artifact? And the 8-ball that anti-Mad smuggled in?
I had figured she was going to switch the artifact with the 8-ball but panel 3 shows that the artifact is still “artifacting” in the cabinet and in panel 5 anti-Mad is strutting down the corridor empty-handed…
Maybe she made the switch off-screen (i.e. while the screen was on Derek). That would mean that the decoy 8-ball was crafted to produce a similar visual “artifacting” effect (which makes sense as something the Baron would plan).
So where’s the real artifact? Maybe it resizes to the user’s size, like many magic items, and anti-Mad now has it in her pocket?
Also, every time in this post where I’ve said “artifact” I actually typed “artifcat” and had to go back and change it. Every single time. My next character is going to be a Catfolk Artificer who calls himself “the Artifcat!”
After last comic, I thought that the Viscount (whom I called the Baron in my post above – derp) has sent anti-Mad to switch the artifact for the 8-ball because the Viscount wanted the artifact .
Why wouldn’t he want to know the future? Kris and Dirk were so eager to hear their fortunes.
But now that I’ve considered the the decoy isn’t off-the-shelf but rather is something that the Viscount has had specially enchanted…
What if the Viscount can use the “decoy” 8-ball to feed Derek editted or entirely fabricated prophecies?
Quite possible! Quite bad too — remember that Derek sends Madeline on missions where she commits a lot of violence, but was unhappy that Dorilys was violent when merely working with him. Perhaps his vow is only to be violent at direct divine command. This could lead to VERY BAD results.
The alt-text has given me an idea on how to defeat the mind slayer mafia: all the have to do is send in Anti-Madeline, and within seconds any mind flayer that comes with 120 ft of her (I believe that’s the range of her telepathy) will instantly have a seizure from her vast amounts of mental swearing.
Anti-Madeline, the bane of all mind flay- I mean, mind slayers in the multiverse

“Beneath notice” is just one big step away from “beneath foot.”
“one big step” I have to appreciate that.
One small step for a man. One big step for Anti-Madeline.
Viscount’s plans always have many steps, especially when Anti-Madeline is involved.
Looks like you called it. Hello from the future, by the way.

One possibility. Then, we have a creature with an — interesting shadow that might change.
Ominous shadow is ominous…
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of shadows?
Only “The Man” knows!
Paladins and every other character who can detect alignment.
Then again, as incorporeal undead, do shadows even have hearts?

Holy &@$£, I just realised something!

Or he thought it could be toned down somewhat. Or he just doesn’t like to see it.
Nice ref to the witch from Oz in the first panel. Will the her shoes give powers? 🙂
Click your heels together three times and… you’ll get sore heels.
Ah. That’s how she’s gonna reach it. Offscreen. X)
Hand-waving ahoy!
MmmmKay … Who the heck is Rue, and why is he/she in the remnants of the cell that (presumably) Malevolus was in? And where has the “purple oaf” gone?
Rue Lilly. She’s that jerk-ass elf team captain.

Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of Maledine? The Shadow knows! MOO HA HA HA HA HAaaaa…*cough* Well, and Maledine, of course.
