This chapter has been going on for so long I’m starting to lose track of the characters. Was this guy’s name and/or species ever mentioned? And how did one of the team captains end up also being an announcer/commentator?
Looking back to that page, it suddenly dawns on me that the mummy Nephthys might be a reference to Sentinels of the Multiverse, as she looks very similar to a member of the villainous Ennead who has the same name. (Granted, the connection might be indirect, since once you come up “female mummy named after actual Egyptian goddess”, your options for how to distinguish her appearance become slightly limited, but I still thought it was particularly close.)
Do you mean in the comic? Because Nephthys wasn’t at all evil in Egyptian mythology nor was there such a thing as an evil Ennead. She was often depicted as the current pharaoh’s wet-nurse and guardian.
Sentinels of the Multiverse is a card game. One of the villains you can fight are the Ennead, including Nephthys.
They’re loosely mythologically based at best.
His name is given in strip 124 as draco stormscale (sic). Therein, he also become the announcer by telling everyone that he is the announcer, and if they don’t like it, the can take it up with Madame Fist.
Holy shit, this chapter IS long. The archive doesn’t even list strip 124.
As for his species, I think ke’s a Dragonborn. No, not dovahkiin, the D&D dragonborn.
Thanks for finding the reference. Though I note that his name is actually spelled Stromscale, not Stormscale.
Dragonborn seemed like a reasonable guess, but I didn’t know if he’d actually been explicitly identified as such. (I gather that the answer is no.)
Incidentally, according to Wiktionary, “Strom” is the German word for “stream” (not “storm” as you might think; that’s “Sturm”). Though it also translates as “electricity” by way of “current”. So maybe our friend Draco is descended from a blue dragon?
Oh, no! They’re planning to attack Jelly C’s distant cousin, Gelatine Square! I wonder what their plan of attack is. Perhaps they’ll enrol Square into an acting class so that s/he breaks a leg.
I was hoping this weird baseball story would be coming to an end. I feel like it is going nowhere and it has been going on for the past few months now. It is worse than real baseball. I don’t know what your future for this comic is, but I hope it is not fantasy baseball league 😛
Actually, going by the earliest post date on the title page for this baseball arc, it started back on September 9, 2015. So, it 2 weeks from now, it will have run for 3 years.
For reference, the comic is only 8 years old, according to the 2010 timestamp on the first page. This one storyline has been nearly half the entire run.

Oh man, I’m terrible at charades. …Um.. fencing. No, circle strafing. Err, pencil pushing? Oh, oh! Pulling off a hat-trick!
A box with a …no, wait…square thing…two or three dimensional square thing. What’s a three dimensional square…wearing a hat? Wait…wait..gimme a minute…
Hexahedron topped with a cloud. Can we call it an obelisk? Must be very tall.
They’re gonna destroy the Murderball Memorial Concrete Block!
I don’t think that’s it. Too…logical.
I give up- you guys have stumped me fair and square.
“Box? We gonna box them in? Box them? Boxing ring? Box Boxford?”

It could be worse. These games could be based on cricket. Rather a sticky wicket, eh?
@ Wyvern
The Thunder team was introduced here in all their glory (names were in the alt-txt)

Ahh thanks Zero. I’ve never heard of the card game so I was very confused!

Given the whole “OGL issues” from way-back-when, I would probably guess he’s a half-dragon.
I don’t get it. What is that supposed to be?
Subtle Hint: x^3 (or x**3), ice- ____., sugar-____
Less Subtle Hint: CUBECUBECUBE
Would CUBECUBECUBE be CUBE cubed?
“Subtle Hint: x^3 (or x**3), ice- ____., sugar-____”
Hmm… Dirty movies? ice-cream? sugar-wafers?
I don’t get it, what the hexahedron is this?!
Is there always room for it?
Lack of planning and focus? A challenge to Mimic’s right word at the right time abilities!
“It’s dignity! Gah, don’t you know dignity when you see it?!”
These common, unassuming pieces of furniture in the first two panels- are they ashtrays?
no, the are one mimic
well spotted
They look like ashtrays.
Drago’s art is too plane to distinguish between a box and a cube.
no, it’s one plane.
Oh, no! They’re planning to attack Jelly C’s distant cousin, Gelatine Square! I wonder what their plan of attack is. Perhaps they’ll enrol Square into an acting class so that s/he breaks a leg.
They’ll need dynamite and a laser beam. Guaranteed to blow its mind.
They need to think outside the box…or cube, in this case.
In another universe, this webcomic would be called Stormscale & Co. It’d also be awesome!
It cant be Cube.
He clearly drew a square.
You have to give the guy credit for his ability to think, and write, outside the box.

I don’t mind this baseball arc, but it hasn’t been months, it has been two and a half years.

I feel like we can squeaka little more out of the graph paper joke.
Not really – I mean, it was pretty graphic.
Some lines aren’t meant to becrossed.
How is an acidic creature so effective at base ball? Seems like his talent would get watered down.
… wow, no reaction. Let’s run the experiment again, with fresh reagents.
More to the point, why is a cube so good with balls?
Oh good, for a second there I was worried he actually had a workable plan.
Drago has gone from slavic to german?
