Assuming advanced DnD 3.5 rule-set;
Jump checks can be made as part of movement
and the result of the Jump check for a long jump results in movement separate from your movement speed*.
That said; a basic Gelatinous Cube has a 10 Str score and a movement speed of 15ft,
which give a penalty of -6 due to the innate lack of skill ranks…
But that is only for stock NPCs and NOT Player characters.
Seeing as our cubic buddy has been taking warrior-type classes,
I would feel it is safe to assume it has invested in the Strength ability score and athletic skills.
Let’s say it has the Run feat and 18 Str with 8 skill ranks (assuming at least lvl 5 with minimum skill points),
then our buddy could “Charge” 75ft (15ft X5) and have a +10 Jump modifier (8 Ranks + 4 Str + 4 Run – 6 Speed).
Even with an average roll of 10, Cube would get a 20 Jump check result,
which would allow one to Long Jump 20ft while reaching a height of 5ft…
just above the typical space of a medium creature such as a Gnoll.
Of course; higher level would allow for a higher bonus, better feats,
and this result could be doubled on a natural 20.
FYI: A Gelatinous cube is listed as weighing 15,000 pounds in the official SRD errata,
so it is actually a legitimate strategy to just goomba stomp the baddies~!
And, err, for the system’s sake;
let’s assume this is somehow an “intelligent ooze”, okay?
^..^;
*This has been debated and tends to be up to DM ruling.
If you know of errata clarification please mention it!
– Cube lands
– Absorbs Gnoll
– Spits explosive out over cliff into lava
– Explosive goes boom (either in-lava or not, either way too far away to harm them)
– Cube digests Gnoll
No gunpowder. But if that’s dynamite rather than TNT, he could be getting dosed with nitroglycerin. I’m not sure what the effects of a potent vasodilator would be during the adrenaline rush of deadly combat – especially for someone with multiple open wounds, but I doubt they’re good.
Actually, break it down by 3.5 rules, and Stabs had readied an action to throw a dagger if she saw Grinner pull out more dynamite. This happened when Grinner was taking an action to throw the dynamite, interrupting him. A called shot to his hand stuck the dynamite there, and he was no longer able to complete his action, wasting it. His move and/or swift actions were probably used drawing and lighting the dynamite already (taking only that much time, clever gnoll that he is). And he might well have burned any action points already doing the backpack full o’ dynamite toss (I think there may have been another point were he likely used one, can’t recall offhand).
Are Called Shots in base 3.5? I thought they were just usually house ruled in like what I do…granted, the only time my guys use them is when they want to derail the plot or do this number on the mini-boss. 😛
Called shots are mostly absent from base 3.5. There are a few places where they’re applied to specific monsters, where attacking a specific part is the monster’s whole point (hydra necks, roper strands, that sort of thing).

Once again, Rusty’s adorableness is the reason I keep reading. That and waiting for her to remind everyone that she has a bajillion knives.
You are refering to Stab.
Rusty is the rust monster (and male, i believe, although it doesnt make that much sens for aberations)
Oh, come on! Don’t you want to see a romance between Rusty and an even cuter “lady bug” ? Maybe with tail flaps that look like a pink bow?
That cave’s gonna look nice with a fresh coat of red paint.
Fortunately, Cube is like a dungeon version of a Roomba…
Hahaha…ewww. <.<
Cube’s jump exceeding his move rate. Cref: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0176.html
I’m sure at some point in his life, Cube ate a pair of boots of jumping or something.
He/She/It leveled up a long time ago
Remember way back at level 1 when Cube had trouble climbing some inch-high stairs? Now he’s jumping like a Dragoon.

Really knows how to get to the point, doesn’t she?
And we’ve got to admit she has a point there.
Yes, she understands getting the point across is vital in every negotiation.
That was indeed piercing commentary.
Yea, it seems everyone has a sharp wit
Wow, Stabs, way to steel Grinner’s moment. You really threw him a curve. All he wanted was to go out with a bang instead of a simper.
Then again, at least the rest of the team seems to have remembered how handy you are to have around.
You can’t just cut off your sentence without a period. Puncture-ation is important.
Her logic cuts like a knife.
I was going to join in the shear volume of blade puns, but then decided against taking a stab at it.
Yes, these conversations are starting to get dull.
That’s a good effect in the fourth panel, showing the Light of Doom shining through Cube as he descends upon Grinner.
I’d yank that knife out sharpish Grinner, or you’ll have a whole lot more to worry about than a hole in your hand.
you know what they say….
theres always room
for jell-o
in this case, a jell-o CUBE
in the resturant of life, grinner just got seated at a table for PAIN!
And we now enter the nasty, nasty realm of called shots. But gonna say she made excellent use of what she had.
She intentionally failed a disarm check.
Which will happen first, the dynamite exploding or cube landing?
My vote is:
– Cube lands
– Absorbs Gnoll
– Spits explosive out over cliff into lava
– Explosive goes boom (either in-lava or not, either way too far away to harm them)
– Cube digests Gnoll
er… how is stabs throwing metal knives while stuck to a superpowerful magnet?
The electromagnet is off (note the severed cables). She’s stuck because it’s *really damn heavy*.
I like the great expressions on everyone’s faces.
Dagger through the hand. Imminent explosion at point blank range. Imminent angry gelatinous cube beatdown.
Where on this list of pain do you think “gunpowder flowing into your bloodstream” ranks?
No gunpowder. But if that’s dynamite rather than TNT, he could be getting dosed with nitroglycerin. I’m not sure what the effects of a potent vasodilator would be during the adrenaline rush of deadly combat – especially for someone with multiple open wounds, but I doubt they’re good.
I doubt he’d get much of a dose, dynamite isn’t a tube full of liquid nitro, it’s absorbed in a binder.
How come Rusty hasn’t eaten the magnet already? If it’s ferromagnetic, it’s, well, ferrous.
Well, he’s distracted… first by Maddy, then by the sight of Cube doing his no-arm smackdown on our favourite gnoll.
Even a Big Eater can get full.
Well, it’s not like it’s popcorn. Why I’ve even been known to put down the pizza slice if the gameplay/action is really good.
Funny how they switched spaces at the end over the magnet ^_^’
I think Rusty realized that being most ABLE to help her, being closest to her, and NOT helping her were a bad combination.
I do think his choice of WHICH of those variables to alter could probably have used some work through.
That’s the way to stick it to Grinner Stabs!
I guess he’s too dumbfounded to simply extinguish, break off, or pull the fuse out.
Of course, Cube is going to curbstomp his face anyway.
