Guys, in 7-17, the psychic said “I’m sure most of you will survive.” As in, since everything else has come true/been accurate, Maddie might ACTUALLY die here. I had the feeling for a while, but now I’m pretty sure 🙁
Only for fairly high-level play. True Resurrection costs about 26,000 gp. When it gets that far, it doesn’t just become difficult—it’s actually putting the rest of the party in danger to give up that much magic item purchasing power.
True, but Cube leaves bones doesn’t he? Making normal Resurrection an option, not so much with being submerged in lava, which isn’t polite enough to leave bones usually 🙁
Wow. I didn’t notice it before, but those cracks in Mimic’s force cage have been there for the last three pages, which I guess is why the cage broke.
Nice detail. I can’t figure out what caused the cracks in the first place though.
While Maddie was fighting, the bard could have do… ANYTHING, try to buff her, or debuff the gnoll. Use Mage Hand… WHATEVER! But nooooo, the bard had to sid on her bardic buttocks, eat popcorn and watch Maddie do ALL the work.
Okay, that dropped my jaw and my heart at the same time. Of course in my game, a paladin heroically sacrificing themselves to save a party member, helpless NPC, children, etc.., has a REALLY good chance of catching the attention of the deity of said paladin. A little SUCCURRO EX DEUS would be nice right now.
I’m a bit of a writer, I fully support no characters being immune to harm and death because you cannot have a genuinely meaningful story if you know that everything is going to be fine at the end. It cheapens the struggles that the characters are put through. It cheapens the reader experience.
I hate to say it, but I completely agree with you. I hate to say it, because that would mean my fav character would die. But as a player who loves to play Paladins, It’s what Paladins do.
She dies. Then after fight is over she gets up.
Mimic: But we saw you die! Right there! Right in front of us! We checked for a pulse and everything!
Maddie: I got better.
Alternate ending.. They cross her hands across her breast. Glows. All better. “Lay on Hands Bitches!”
On the plus side, with his plans having fallen apart around him, loss of his sword, and detonation of his bag of explosives, Grinner is unarmed and quickly running short on options. Stabs still has her knives, and look. Lava pool conveniently placed for preventing him from being raised again. Either I expect him to burn or that’s just my righteous fury talking.
As much as I’d love to see Grinner die permanently, one should point out that an antagonist of this quality is hard to come by. The same logic explains why The Joker is most likely never going to die/reform/retire.
I’ve said it before – force is basically pure magic damage. If these were expendable magic items that would be one thing, but Presti identified these as TNT.
Well, I guess we should give her a proper sending off poem
“Now your life has gone to waste,
Your pretty face is all but paste.
I hope you like the taste,
Of What had happen to my face!” – Grinner

OUCH!!!
(on the bright side, it cracked open Mimic’s box. time to show what you’re made of, Mimic!)
Let’s just hope he doesn’t end up covered in what Maddie’s made of.
Time to turn into an unassuming object…. for revenge!
On the other bright side, if Maddie somehow survives she’s almost certainly earned her Holy Avenger (assuming I’m thinking of the right edition).
Paladins, lay on hands ~ so long as they’re conscious, they’re hard to kill. A dip in the lava would do it though …
You do know that they only get so many points of LoH per day, right….
Also, she just lost a good chunk of her hands.
Guys, in 7-17, the psychic said “I’m sure most of you will survive.” As in, since everything else has come true/been accurate, Maddie might ACTUALLY die here. I had the feeling for a while, but now I’m pretty sure 🙁
I share your analysis.
Panel 5 of 7-17 had actually me worried for some time.
Same. He looks. . . sad, as though he knew Maddie would die, and it was what made me guess Maddie wouldn’t see past this adventure.
If I may suggest, she may very well die…
…but that doesn’t mean she has to STAY dead…?
Calamitus also died and yet he came back.
In dungeons and dragons, death comes cheap.
Death is significantly less cheap if your half blown up body falls into lava and can’t be recovered. Even in dungeons and dragons 🙁
Less cheap but still affordable.
Only for fairly high-level play. True Resurrection costs about 26,000 gp. When it gets that far, it doesn’t just become difficult—it’s actually putting the rest of the party in danger to give up that much magic item purchasing power.
We’re talking paladins here. I would like to see some angels or solars out there
Bit characters have returned after being eaten by Cube. What is mere lava beside that?
True, but Cube leaves bones doesn’t he? Making normal Resurrection an option, not so much with being submerged in lava, which isn’t polite enough to leave bones usually 🙁
I wonder if Evil Maddie may be used as spell focus instead Maddie’s bodyparts. Reincarnation, anyone?
Adventure to procure little Maddie, anyone?
Wow. I didn’t notice it before, but those cracks in Mimic’s force cage have been there for the last three pages, which I guess is why the cage broke.
Nice detail. I can’t figure out what caused the cracks in the first place though.
It was Roxy’s shout spell in 7-72.
Not much of a forcecage. More like a pink plastic box with a lock.
It’s a good thing she took +2 blast resistance on her armor… right?
You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.
And now Maddie’s done both…
Whatever happened to Evil Maddie’s adventures in the mouse kingdom anyway?
Maddie’s hair in panel 2 looks a bit off. Too much bulk on the left side maybe? Reminds me more of Presti’s.
On top of everything else, it’s a Bad Hair Day.
You!!! It’s all THAT BARD’S FAULT!
While Maddie was fighting, the bard could have do… ANYTHING, try to buff her, or debuff the gnoll. Use Mage Hand… WHATEVER! But nooooo, the bard had to sid on her bardic buttocks, eat popcorn and watch Maddie do ALL the work.
And that’s why I don’t like bards
ò_ó
YOU SPOONY BARD!!!
In her defense, Roxy was busy with Burnum, who would have AoAed her hard if she tried spellcasting, and her lute’s gone.
AoO, not AoA, sorry.
well. I think now is the time when Mimic does something useful, since he’s free now. Just not sure what…
He becomes a bridge or platform of some kind, stopping Maddie from falling into the lava!
Four BOOMS! in one panel! That Maddie is one tough paladin! Boom!
Okay, that dropped my jaw and my heart at the same time. Of course in my game, a paladin heroically sacrificing themselves to save a party member, helpless NPC, children, etc.., has a REALLY good chance of catching the attention of the deity of said paladin. I know that, really I do.
But this hurts.
Well done.
I hate to say it, but I completely agree with you. I hate to say it, because that would mean my fav character would die. But as a player who loves to play Paladins, It’s what Paladins do.
Oh no…
wait, and just why has the rest of the gang been sitting on the sideline and just watching and doing nothing more than shouting???!!!
Only speculating, but…
Presti: out of spells
Roxy: Dealing with Burnum
Stabs: Unconscious from the fall?
Rusty: No ranged abilities
Cube: Somewhere else.
I think Cube’s still bagged up.
Maybe Stabs hasn’t turned Grinner into a pincushion because she snuck away to release Cube?
Mimic the case holding you is cracked. Don’t let the paladin fall in the lava.
She dies. Then after fight is over she gets up.
Mimic: But we saw you die! Right there! Right in front of us! We checked for a pulse and everything!
Maddie: I got better.
Alternate ending.. They cross her hands across her breast. Glows. All better. “Lay on Hands Bitches!”
Doesn’t LoH take conscious effort?
Yes.
Yeah, thought so. So the self-feelski wouldn’t work.
ish? It was upgraded to a swift action for self in Pathfinder.
Well, Roxy, maybe if you’d done SOMETHING this wouldn’t have happened.
I do not think it will be her final end… in the words of the psion on 7-16… “You learn little in victory, but much in defeat” or something like that
Well, my friend… That’s a Paladin.
C’mon, Mimic. You’ve proven before you’re not totally an empty loud-mouth chatterbox. Another outside-the-box solution needed now.
As much as I’d love to see Grinner die permanently, one should point out that an antagonist of this quality is hard to come by. The same logic explains why The Joker is most likely never going to die/reform/retire.
I’m sorry, dangit – this was supposed to be a reply to [Random Guy #108] above, but I messed-up.
for now, he still is IN the box…
I’d like to see if Mimic’s been taking more levels in Beholder, to get that eye of his to do something useful.
I wonder, what would the damage type be for TNT? I’m thinking 50/50 fire and force.
blast, fall and constriction have a special type of damage, bypassing classical resistance.
You can enchant an armor to halve those.
I’ve said it before – force is basically pure magic damage. If these were expendable magic items that would be one thing, but Presti identified these as TNT.
I do and do not want her to die. On the one hand, storytelling, but on the other hand MADDIEEEEEEE!!
To be honest, considering what she’s been through a little dynamite is probably not going to have much effect.
“Let me hear you say Wayo!”
…
No?
Well, I guess we should give her a proper sending off poem
