Nice Reflex save on Maddy’s part there. But otherwise, not a lot actually happening this week. Hope this fight doesn’t take too long and we can resume advancing the plot.
There’s a couple of ways I could see this being ruled:
1 – A ‘mock trample.’ The Girallon doesn’t have the Trample ability, but falling onto someone from a height and attempting to stomp them is a lot like a trample attack. In this case, Maddy made a reflex save, but since this isn’t a real trample, the DM could’ve ruled that she escapes damage altogether instead of save for half as usual.
2 – A plummeting charge. The Girallon simply made a charge attack by dropping. It meets all of the requirements for a charging attack (must move at least ten feet, no intervening obstacles, must be a straight line of continuous movement), and the Girallon only made a single attack at the end of it, which is consistent with a charge (the stomp). In this case, the Girallon missed due to her AC, and apparently missed low enough that her dodge bonus to AC was the deciding factor in determining whether she was hit or not. Maddy’s wearing only a breastplate with greaves, pauldrons, and vambraces (not actual gauntlets), so she could still qualify as a breastplate (+3 maximum dex bonus) instead of half-plate (+0).
Not sure her weapon has high enough penetration for a killing blow, would have been better to flee and come back with something more damaging… or just avoid the ape altogether, she may just be too low level to beat it
Whoops, looks like I was wrong about the Girallon being declawed. This one’s got a full set. So much for that theory as to how they got it into a tutu and facepaint without losing an entire troupe!
Something just occurred to me: Paladin (Madeline), Princess (Of the same name), Prestidigitator (Presti the Spellcaster), Uh – “Puncturist” (Stabs of the infinite knifes), anyone else see a pattern here?
He’s posted on Twitter that he’s totally involved in a new, awesome, job and has no time right now. So being the good comic fans that we are, we wait patiently and wish him all the best with the new job. He will get more content up, but real life and all that, you know. https://twitter.com/rustyandco

Oh no.. thats going to lead to grapple rules and a rend attack. I liked that character too.
I’m sure she’ll be fine. That DOES look kinda painful, though!
Bones should not go crunch.
How about armor?

Doubt that was any kind of save, that was just her dex contributing to her AC and resulting in a miss.
In half plate, with its low cap to your Dex bonus?

She missed an opportunity, there…
…impale the “trident”-handle in the ground as you duck-&-roll away, & the critter can impale itself on it as it lands!

Actually, given the fact that “Spear-like weapons” can be set against a charge for double damage, before a crit…
Awww.. I was expecting a deflection into the pirahna tank. 😛
So was I.
What could be more witty than “graaahhh!”
“Ogrillion sad clown, provide Graaaahh- too-it-tus violence!”
Girallon. There is such a thing as an ogrillon, at least if you’re still running AD&D, but ogrillons are boxers and girallons are all about wrassling.
“Clown sad. Soul of Ogrillion trapped in a Girallion’s body.”
Well, in this case it’s more of a Giracllown.
Ah…I think I see.
The advice she was given ended in ‘we learn a lot in defeat’-> ‘we learn a lot in the feet’.
Either because she was about to step into the pit OR a hint to stab at the ogrillion’s feet?
…or perhaps *TRIP* the creature into the pit…?
lesson learned, some enemies just need to be nuked from orbit. Too bad Stabs wasn’t flying overhead with the cannon.
It might yet mean that she learns to tell Stabs from the fakes by looking at the feet.
An excellent point!
I’m gonna go back over the last few pages, now, & test this theory.
Bring on the gnomes flying tiny biplanes! It wouldn’t even be the first time this comic referenced the movie!

Here comes the inevitable attempt to rend.
A shame she isn’t a mage. Then she could just shock the monkey.
Hey wait PUT THAT DOWN WHAT ARE YOU OWOWOWOWOwowowowow my everything…
Alll I could think of was the comic in the Dragon magazine showing the results of wearing a “love” amulet. Maddy’s going to need a can opener. 🙂
Dear me, this is proving to be a rather prolonged couple of days….

OK, I reached for that last one. 😉
Player of instruments (Roxy)
It’s a conspiracy I tell you!

That’s still no excuse. He shouldn’t be getting a job like that if it’s keeping from updating his fantasy web comic on time.
Fear not! That’s only our time is passing, Madeline should be OK, fiction time running at speed of story.
