So the question is are boot of leaping & springing going to save her or will it be the aquatic monster in the pit setting of her “Trident” of warning. My vote is both will come into play.
According to the wiki Derros are “Usually chaotic evil”, so as a Paladin would Madeline not be able to detect that? Or is a Paladins detect evil ability a thing they have to cast?
Technically, Detect Evil is a cone-shaped effect that they have to will to work, so if they’re not actively pinging for evil, they don’t detect it.
Its not something they have to “cast” per the rules due to it being a supernatural ability (rather than a Spell or Spell-Like), but it still requires activation.
Maddie is a paladin and one of the class restrictions is must not knowingly travel with evil creatures, unless in dire emergency. Now given Stabs behaviour and the need for you to come along would you use detect evil on stabs unless you absolutley had to?
Paladin’s are honest but they have a class skill of Diplomacy, so my theory is accepted social lies where everyone knows your are lying are fine. By lying for your own advantage is bad.
Thing is, Stabs isn’t evil. Chaotic, maybe (okay, almost certainly), and she might even be merely Neutral instead of Good. But she’s not Evil. There’s no need for Maddie to accept “a little white lie” about Stabs, because Stabs isn’t a bad person. Besides, Maddie doesn’t like lies, even when they’d help her. Furthermore, Maddie doesn’t strike me as the person to compromise her morals or personal code of ethics for any reason whatsoever. She’s stopped fighting and killing a creature that’s Evil simply because it was in need of help: http://rustyandco.com/comic/level-6-19/
She was listed as Chaotic Good in the papers. Now, I agree that her revealed character traits — thus far, a delight in killing monsters and taking their treasure, a tendency to resort to violence, a distaste for law, and a willingness to help friends — point more strongly to Chaotic than to Good — but they probably used magic to be sure it wasn’t Chaotic Evil or Neutral.

Derro Lady may not realize that Madeline’s Reflex saves and Jump skill are crazily high.
I will be disappointed if Maddie goes down to a silly trap from a doofy blue dwarf.
What a drop off from an elder god.
Hmm. I can see a couple of possibilities.
The pitchfork warns in spite of her foe not being aquatic.
Maddie accidentally stabs her foe, considering how she’s holding that pitchfork. . . .
>The pitchfork warns in spite of her foe not being aquatic.
Calling it now, the trapdoor has a shark tank under it.
Well, Madeline’s trident has been a peculiar shade of blue these past two strips… Maybe it’s already working?
Noooo, that’s just a continuity error. 🙁
I’ve fixed it.

She trips OVER the pit and stabs the button, making her foe think she is a genious and has seen thru the disguise.
Smell check for EVIL!

OTOH, Maddie has been known to sniff the air at odd times and realize the truth.

And remember in most D&D games it’s Good to kill the monsters and stea… take their loot. SOme monsters are even color coded for your convenience.
