Chapter: Comic, Level 7 — Circus Minimus
The results of the Rusty & Co. fan art contest are in, and the Knights of the Ruined Table have selected two winners! Congratulations go to Portaxx and Kyla for winning the most votes, and each will receive a Rusty plush! A big thanks and a Gnome-Prize to everyone who entered:

Roxy Casbaugh…? Boooo. I can’t even think of a good counter-pun to make to that, so boooo.
A Bard. With that crazy Casbaugh sound.
Methinks that Mike R. plans out these stealth puns like a ninja that patiently waits years before he springs.
Her name has been on the cast page like that for quite a while, actually.
a-a-a-and Robespierre Casbaugh. :]
I don’t like it.
It’s not kosher.
Madeline has a last name! Time to update the cast page.
A paladin named “Goodlaw”? GEE, I WONDER WHAT HER ALIGNMENT IS…
Secret Evil- pretends to be the goodest goodie goodie until just the right moment. the only way to identify is that they try to hard. case in point ‘Goodlaw’
Of course. We remember how BIG her secret evil side was.
The worst evil is done by those who think they are doing good…
The Artifact would not be fooled. No, that’s how evil she really is.
Actually, I’m surprised her last name isn’t Gardener.
I want to find the person who started up this mistake of using “lead” as its own past-tense form. And past-participle form as well, I guess.
So, in both cases, it’s “led”.
Like the zeppelin.
I’m thinking it’s a pun in this case. I don’t know much about DnD, but I’m assuming Rusty would also like to eat lead, though perhaps not as readily as he would iron.
I suppose Rusty will be tempted by eating lead in the future
A smoking gun?
That’s an intresting theory.
Rust Monsters will eat any metal, even one that can’t be rusted. So yes, he would eat lead and that is an interesting theory indeed.
Well, that was cryptic all right. Do these “rules” specify you have to be annoying?
Well, duh. If they aren’t, you offend the Gods of Plot & Drama.
Agreed. Besides, the forces of good are always in a rush. The forces of evil are the ones that take time to outline plans and brag. Meanwhile the forces of neutrality always seem to be completely uncommunicative, those jerks.
“Five nine is your height and 180’s your weight. You cash in your chips about page 88.”
Was…was that a Bored of the Rings reference!!!
Yea, verily and forsooth. Also, ‘Behold the grim Mount Badass.’
Do I see Madeline’s new weapon in the background?
LOL I missed that entirely. A “Magic Trident” =)
That is clearly a quaddent. It’s 33% better than a trident.
well spotted a week ahead of time, sir
Rusty Russel. I mean, he could be making that up. Or not. I can’t tell if his hesitation was incredulous or not. It fits, though.
Rusty is nickname for Russell, also sometimes people with red hair.
Did the alt text change?
Or the hesitation could be because he’s reading the mind of a creature with the intelligence of a cocker spaniel.
…or, maybe a Jack Russell terrier? 😉
Looks like our Rogue is going to have to apply her Use Magic Device skills, and Prestige is going to take a general level in badass in melee. Given that Grinner is very genre savvy and will likely be prepared to exploit the temptations and weaknesses of all, this makes perfect sense for the girls to do something unexpected to thwart Grinner’s Batman Gambits.
Maybe she will have to say “please” and “thank you”.
It was pretty obvious the advice was appropriate. Can you imagine Stabs needing to be TOLD to go for the jugular?
Presti needs to take a level? Did you see what she did with that badger launcher?
Presti is going to have to fight with her teeth and Stabs will have to be polite, that’s my prediction
I really do like this guy.
Also I’m pretty sure that Roxy’s last name has been around for quite some time now, at least on the cast page anyway.
You notice he objects to being called by his last name and title, but then uses it all on them.
Too bad my work did not number among the winners. But would you still at least correct my nickname since I am not weeaboo enough to call myself [anything]sama? The actual spelling can be confirmed in the e-mail I sent the picture in, in case you suspect this message of fraudulent claims to the artist’s identity.
My apologies! I was finishing up the post and comic at 3am, a good time for mistakes to sneak in. Won’t happen again.
Much appreciated.
Poor Madeline. She knows this is important stuff but she looks so lost, again. My group has a saying: ‘When you need the paladin’s brain you’re going to end up lost again.’ Seems to apply here as well…… INT being a chronic dump stat for paladins in our pack when we can even get one into the party! Rusty just looks surprised…… I guess he’s not used to anyone actually giving him advice beyond ‘No eat x’ or ‘Eat x’!
My group has a different saying “Lawful good, not Lawful Stupid.” Though admittedly it might not apply to Ms Goodlaw.
Nah. Madeline is Stupid Good. Remember when the kraken had a chokehold on Mimac and she still condoled with it?
But she’s so astounding that she can be Stupid Good and Awesome Cool. At the same time.
Nah, Stupid Good wouldn’t have fought in the first place. I’m not sure if we should give the poor thing the credit to realise that you can’t throttle someone without a throat, and so Mimic wasn’t really in great danger, though. She’s proved to be depressingly bad on the smarts front recently.
Okay, so I don’t actually play tabletop RPGs so forgive my ignorance. The player of a paladin with low intelligence can still make intelligent decisions right? So, put all your points into strength and skill, and direct your character to make good decisions.
Savvy?
This varies heavily from group to group. In theory the player is kind of responsible for roleplaying according to their mental stats, but a lot of GMs hesitate to enforce this because it tends to be bad for group cohesion. Players are just there to have fun, so they tend not to appreciate being punished because they kinda sorta broke an unwritten rule that may or may not matter to the rest of the group. The modern theory tends to favor rewarding players who do especially good roleplaying, so if you dump you INT stat and then actually act stupid in-character (in a deliberate in-character way, not just the kinds of stupid players naturally get up to), you might actually get bonus XP or be given Inspiration or something. But again, this is a precedent many GMs won’t want to set. So your mileage really will vary depending on the table you’re at.
I suspect these have to do with some giant body, maybe a statue or something. “A word in the right ear” might mean the ear which is opposite to left, not the “correct” ear. “Much from defeat” could, in a silly way, be “much from da feet.” “Lead by the nose” is…well, a nose. Jugular is neck, and perhaps either magic words are mouth, or the remember has to do with the brain? Those are a bit less clear cut. But still, there’s “body part” analogies all over here.
Hmmm. Zar looks like he might be Polynesian.
Would that make him a Flyin’ Hawaiian Psion?
Rusty: No eat lead?
Carpe jugulum! :p
Late to the party, but anyways.
“A word in the right ear does wonders”
Roxy seems to have leaned “shout” at the beginning of this level, and she has to cup her hands in some way to cast it.
Maybe she’ll have to pretend to be whispering something to someone, and when she is close -> pow, 5d6 straight to the skull.
On a related note, do eardrums count as fragile objects?
For some reason I’m reading Zar in the voice of Master Fung from Xiaolin Showdown.
woudn’t it be rusty mcrustyface?
