Maddie’s been fighting immortal vampires all night, she’s already pretty terribly injured and she was just sneak-attacked with an explosive arrow.
It’s quite reasonable to assume she’s not fighting at her full capability right now.
Rather than getting more tough, it seems as though Grinner just got a lot smarter about how he’s handling things now. He let them go through a whole chapter to wear themselves down, then struck at the last moment and had special countermeasures prepared.
To be fair, we have never really seen how competent Grinner is, as he was taken out by Robespierre. Who we know to be strong enough to face an ettin and win.
I really thought that Mimic was going to turn out to be Grinners sword and mess up his plan. That’s one of the things I love about this series, it’s always surprising me.

She should get a refund for that vorpal halberd.
And upgrade the replacement to an adamantine haft.
Alas poor halberd, we barely knew thee. To think that we have heard their last snicker-snack.
This page is a real downer.
How true. One hopes that Rusty can help her at the bottom.
The kracken is also elegible. I figure rusty just followed one of his snacks down the stream.
I feel my gorge rising. Er, falling. Whatever.
So, is this just worf effect or has Grinner just become really tough?

Really competent, then.

Well, wouldn’t an ettin be less tough then a remorhaz? Besides, letting the bard go about her way as she enters camp is not really proffessional.
I imagine it’s another effect of the artifact
She could probably fight better if she opened her eyes.
Actually she’d probably fight worse. Her most badass fighting feats always involve keeping her eyes closed.
“Maddie…use the Force….”
her most badass fighting happens when she’s only slightly conscious, or mostly dead, or something like that
Can we assume the blade went somewhere it was not expected to go? to our patchwork wolf’s detriment?
Does anyone see a discarded tag labelled “DRAMA” lying around?

Next thing you know, mimic was Grinners sword all along. He just didn’t want to blow his cover.
In my head, Grinner has the same voice as Don Karnage…
“Non! No one has the voice of Don Karnage except for… Don Karnage! (Which is my wonderful self!) For surely I am uniquely wonderful, yesno?”
A-heh.
Grinner makes my End of Campaign antipaladin look shtoowped.
