Too early for philosophy or the necessary liquor to entertain such a question. * I would say the attack was personally directed to Presti, esp. if Big Red managed to survive * But then again I do wonder if mimics like gelatinous cubes have no brains per se and so are immune to mind flayer influence. ‘Course, I’m more familiar with mind flayers via Nethack and Slash’Em, where one good serving of fried flayer was beneficial.
If they were mindless or immune to mind-affecting effects, it would say so in their MM entry. They contain no such clause in either 3rd or 4th edition. In fact, 3e places them at INT 10 and 4e at INT 19.
So yeah, our friend Mimic clearly has a mind. He just doesn’t use it…
… of all the clients Mimic would have… he actually got one with a brain… I wonder if Madaline the Paladin with her Hoely Avenger would’ve been seen as tastey by the Illithids?
You mean makin’ people disappear and then presentin’ a plausible denial that they were nowhere in the area, and they got lots of witnesses to prove it?
Oh, you mean the ‘mind flayer’ one, not the ‘Mob’ one.

do mimics even have minds?

duh! Anyone with a mind would have known better than to say “Safe!” — it was tempting fate.
I have always been of the persuasion that only an intelligent creature would be that stupid.
Just checked my monster manual: yes, they have an intelligence score (decent one, even, average 10).
Oh don’t you dare hurt Presti! I think we will be having calamari tonight. ..with some fava beans and a nice chianti.
Hmm, what does her left eye say?
the right one says ‘Ni’
I think its supposed to be “te” but so hard to tell
Captcha: TLTS…
Add an i and it describes presti..
It doesn’t actually say anything. It’s not letters, just a highlight effect. But apparently she’s got two pupils per eye now.
I think it says the word “nil” actually, defined as nothing as she just got her mind blasted by an Illithid.
It actually looks a bit like Japanese kana to me… unfortunately I don’t actually read Japanese so I can’t be sure.
Illithid uses Mind blast, it’s super effective!

I have been wondering why none of the Mind Flayers were using their iconic ability.
You mean makin’ people disappear and then presentin’ a plausible denial that they were nowhere in the area, and they got lots of witnesses to prove it?

The bristles on that broom can support Presti’s weight. How? Wizard.
