As someone with the name Rocco I find this absolutely brilliant. Mind flayer names. MORE.

No, that’s “R’occo” — never forget the apostrophe, or The Oatmeal and I will come by and pummel you with gym socks stuffed full of dill pickles (see http://theoatmeal.com/comics/apostrophe for details).

Adding a standard mobster accent to these two instantly improves this strip by like 500%.

Not that it needed it. Keep up the good work!

Also have I missed it or has Rusty somehow completely managed to resist the temptation to do any 4th edition jokes?

I think we’re sticking with actual D&D as the subject matter, which precludes any 4th Edition jokes.

Uhm… “trained in Perception”? Right there, on the strip?

Have I missed any sarcasm tags?

Pathfinder RPG also uses Perception, so it’s not just a 4e thing. And Rangers, as usual, are one of few with it as a class skill.

So, what? We’re dealing with the GoodFlayas here?

Well, crap. Now I can’t get the voices outta my head! Aagh. Also, good try, mimic. But stonewalling ain’t your forte.

Actually, do mind-flayers even speak? Or are they somehow managing a mobster accent even in brain-to-brain communication?

Well now, looks like we have a name for the Mind Flayer group. Well done!

Man, and I was going to go with “the Calamafia.”

You know? Calamari? Mafia? Calama- I’m just going to go over here and sit down quietly.

“Wasn’t NO wall?” Bad R’occo! No double negatives!

Pfft, and mind flayers are supposed to be smart…

They are. Look, one of the great tragedies of our time is that right now, somewhere in Alabama, there could be a guy with the solution to world hunger and a cure for the clap – but it wouldn’t matter, because he’d have an Alabaman accent and no scientist would ever be willing to listen to him long enough to realize that his ideas are valid.

Besides, Common ain’t his first language, you know what I mean? They’re ITALIAN-Illithid-Americans, you see what I”m sayin’?

I love this comic, it’s very inspired! Good work!

Clearly, we have here members of the “criminal Underdark”, engaged in “illithid” activities. 😛

As to a comment on the actual comic, let me simply say that, above even its general hilariousness and quality, I love some of the dialogue and poses employed (these past two pages containing some excellent examples).

Well….now it seems that these are true Italian Mafia types, or sicillian? Or hired by same. These two must be the village idots of Mind Flayers (recall if you will that as a race Mind Flayers have genius level Intel). These two must be near human average..not stupid but slowwwww for their race. Using wands in broad daylite, in front of bystanders…sloppy sloppy, bad kalamari. Becoming a wall is quick thinking for Mimic, but he forgot to get rid of the mouth. I agree, strip keeps getting better and better 🙂

Just asking but is Mimic’s mouth based off the Mona Lisa’s from Darkwing Duck? I just keep flashing back to that when I see Mimic.

That opening caption is a very subtle inside joke for RPG fans. See, in both current forms of D&D, combat is split into 6-second intervals. Thus, everything on this page is taking place on the 3rd combat round after… awwwww, never mind. It was a ten-percenter joke anyhow.

You’d think Mimic would have attacked by now. I don’t think we’ve seen him actually ambush anything yet. But that could well be purposeful. Maybe he’d stop being lovable if he reminded people of monsters they have fought.
