    Counteracting the ‘idiot fighter’ stereotype.

Someone hasn’t read The Order of the Stick. Or rather, two people haven’t.

A cliché can be subverted multiple times without the subversion losing its freshness.

I’m a little surprised Rusty hasn’t eaten his armor anyway.

Oh, yeah. He’s smart enough not to start a fight with these two, but still dumb enough to pat the rust monster on the back…

In this pose he did move behind antennae and keeps an eye on them, though. Not too appetizing for Don, but not really stupid either.

Well, the callimafia didn’t eat his brains.

Real reliable sentry they’ve got there.

The drawback at hiring intelligent sentries.

well if he was good with the whole “sworn to” thing instead of dropping his oaths when convenient he’d still be a paladin

Maybe Rusty doesn’t like blackcurrant flavour, even if it does contain plenty of iron.

Sounds like the guard is an Anti-Paladin, and a smart one to boot! What was the Don thinking, hiring a CE type to guard the tunnel?

Blackguard is a prestige class that can be any evil. Chaotic is not required, and in fact may be a poor choice.

Blackgaurds are known as Anti-Paladins and are often called so. They need 14 wisdom to cast their highest level spells so I think that’s why he had the sudden insight of not to mess with those two if he valued his (un)life.

I think Rusty either wasn’t hungry or is saving the armour for on the way out.

I would have killed to be able to do this after my party of three ran into a dead-end and got cornered by a couple of rust monsters. Only three characters, the barbarian and arcane knght were basically useless and actually took the sorceresses’ staff to fight with.

Of course I think the DM was looking for a wipe, because both Rust Monsters were wearing collars of anti-magic. AND there was a Drow with a very dangerous non-magical bow on the other side of them in our only way out. We survived, but only because the DM took pity and had the Drow retreat to fight another monster in the area.

The evil blackguard seems to be wearing some boxer shorts with special properties. If he has gelatinous cube resistant shorts, what else could such fabric do?

No! You’re supposed to mindlessly attack the heroes and give them valuable XP! Bad minion! BAD MINION!

Last I checked, you get xp for over coming the challenge, no matter how you overcome it. That’s why it’s called ‘role playing’. If you’re GM isn’t giving you role play xp, you need a new GM.

But Sir Malevolus never finished his “challenge”. He just decided to help them based on his own deduction, not because they rolled for Intimidation. What kind of a munchkin campaign would it be, where the PCs get XP for doing nothing?

What kind of munchkin campaign would allow a rust monster and a gelatinous cube into the party?

Eh, pass on the XP. I’m here for a good roleplay and having enemies have brains (at least occasionally) actually makes things interesting! You’re winding up for a combat and they choose the path that lets them live. Suddenly you have an NPC that they can come across later! Kinda like the Masked Henchman (Check out that comic, it’s great!).
