Yep. I believe he mentioned he had relations in low places and will be back, before disappearing in lava like some T800.
I didn’t realize how low.
Smarter readers than me were quick to notice the cues and mention the Marquis.
(OT – speaking of T800, people taking the subway in Vienna, Austria these days (June 2025) will hear Arnold Schwarzenegger telling them how proud he is of them for taking public transit rather than a car)
First reaction: isn’t that Derek’s armband (in battle mode)? Why would Derek be a replacement for any of the Viscount’s plans?
Second reaction: has Derek ever met the Viscount? Could they even be in the same room without one of them destroying the other’s plans?
Third reaction (after going back and checking https://rustyandco.com/comic/level-8-96/): oh, Derek wears his armband on his right arm, and this here is a left arm. So either it’s a simple swap, or Derek got a new one for his left arm… or we’re about to meet someone else who already had a similar weapon.
(also, much like Presti’s use of Ice Storm against the lava golems, I like how she’s still a believer in the better-safe-than-sorry double-tap!)
At this point I have to wonder if Presti is working on a metamagic feat “Repeat Spell” When applied to an instant-effect spell, it activates a second time one round later. I’m thinking the spell would have to be prepared as two levels higher than normal, so this Fireball would have to be prepared as a fifth-level spell.

I wonder… when did Arnold himself last take public transportation?
Half artifact, half barbarian; all gnoll.

Maybe it’s an evil twin/counterpart of Derek, like “Morok the Warlock”.

Better than Quicken spell, with its four levels-markup, but it would mean setting off a fireball *on herself* twice in a row.
… Ouch.
Protection from Fire potion
‘Protection’, yes. Not ‘immunity’. And potions are usually at the lowest effective level.
Presti would brew it herself for the necessary level, if necessary.
That’s a real 3.0 feat. It’s 3 levels higher though.
Being willing to sacrifice troops for victory is nice and all, but it only counts if you win.
He is not using General Tacticus’s playbook.
I think he’s using Zapp Brannigan’s playbook.
Underestimate how many troops you are willing to sacrifice? My friend, we’re counting on it.
“Some of you may die, but that is a risk I am willing to take”
