Considering the Rhyming Fiends WANT Madeline to remember all of this (see the end of The Called Shot Heard ‘Round the World), what do they want her recounting of this tale to do? Engender a sense of helplessness or futility? Or do they WANT the ‘heroes’ to take action to stop the multiverse from disintegrating?
Continuing my theory that the crustaceous worm horrors are actually larvae, this is my guess as to what is happening:
-worm thing takes them back to its nest
-Maddie learns that it’s just a kid and feels awful about hurting a kid
-more portals means more horrors and the heroes are forced to beat up children in order to save reality
-after the good guys know the monsters are kids from Maddie’s story, they can’t plead innocence, overall causing a cosmic shift in balance of Good versus Evil
It is so amazing how this comic repeatedly captures the essence of a RPG gaming session. This tomfoolery is exactly what good players would do and a good GM would allow – while secretly ripping his hair out…

Considering Maddie was crying after remembering everything in the baseball episode, I have a bad feeling about this.
Well, said, Elan!

I suspect the answer is Yes and Yes. Misery is great, but it doesn’t do any good if the world comes to an end.

Living in a crumbling world…
You took the meh-night train going a-ny-where…”
