Level 11: #74
Chapter: Level 11 — Castle Life
“Bing” sort of sounds like “Ding”, which reminds me: We’re closing in on the end of the chapter, so if you’ve got a question or two for the Critical Missives mailbag, now’s the time to send them to Mike@RustyAndCo.com!
Now THAT’S a +5 regeneration ability.
Ummm, I need to file for a change of address. No I didn’t move, it’s complicated…
“Bing”
“The Castle has gained a Level”
The CR on a golem that big must’ve been enormous, so good on her
You are unquestionably the most magnificent of oozes, my lady.
Well, all’s well that ends well! Still wondering what the heck our villains were doing though and what their actual end goal was…
I am reasonably certain that Dog Town is either bleeding or having discussions about the afterlife with his deity.
The castle is now a LOT closer to the Bradd Pit. Dog Town the Derro is dead(neatly preventing him from spilling the beans on any orders he might have been given). And Malevolus is going to arrive tomorrow just in time to deliver the fungicide needed to wipe out Dr. Grawlf’s new friends.
There’s definitely a chess game being played here. The problem is that the heroes are still in the ‘how does the horsey piece move again?’ stage.
They literally moved a castle. The white player regained control before it could fall off the board.
All that work for a tiny cosmetic reward? What is this, an MMO? 😉
Well done, Oozanka. Next question, now that the golem is defeated, can Oozanka move the castle?
Will Oozanka move the castle?
She probably wants to have her moat back.
I like the sparkles in the air in the last two panels. Subtle, but appropriate!
I love how Roxie grabbed the hat after Oozanka ‘Belkar’d’ it off her head in the previous strip
Can I say “Belkar’d”? See the last panel:

So now the question is: Is this what Viscount and his ‘handlers’ expected/wanted?
If Viscount indeed expected this, I’m gonna be REALLY mad until he gets “desperately beg for salvation” phase.
I wanna see that *BLEEP*’s plans in shambles.
So, as far as “Castle Life” goes: Oozanka is a life form that lives between the stone of the castle, the castle has itself been a golem, and many of the live inhabitants are controlled by living fungus.
It looks like they will keep Oozanka, they have destroyed the golem-ness, and they are going to exterminate the fungus. What will happen to Grawlf, Whitey, and the guards?
And will Presti ever get to have a shower and breakfast?
As I understand it, there was a giant slime living in the walls of the castle. However, it was chilling out on the basis of “Don’t bother me, I won’t bother you.” When the Viscount animated the castle, he may have also made the slime more powerful. When the castle’s animating force had a violent breakdown and went to pieces, it destroyed the animating spirit and the empowered ooze was able to pull it back together.
Just one suggestion for the future: no major renovations without clearing it with the ooze first.
What happened was that Oozanka destroyed the castle killing the golem, then put it back together.
Front drawbridge looks like a face. Deliberate?
The castle drawbridge has actually been very expressive as a face. It looked confused in 11-58 and panicked in 11-60. Then the eye windows vanished in 11-61. Now that the golem is dead, the windows have reappeared, and the drawbridge face looks perky. So, maybe the drawbridge face is Oozanka’s face. Just my latest theory. You can see my comments on those strips.
Hmm, where did Cube go in all of this?
okay, new question: Why didn’t she do that earlier?
She didn’t know what was going on. Cube had to tell her.
I like how Presti thinks she can stop a block of masonry the size of her entire threatened area with a buckler-sized Shield spell.
It worked on the poison-tipped ballista bolt.
I always like castles that have secret internal defenses unknown even to the occupants. A massive internal slime is basically a pre-chewed gumball guardian.
