They don’t think of themselves as the same person, but they do have access to the host’s memories. Whether the former persona could pull a Durkon takeover remains uncertain. A serious threat to the Princess might put this question to the test, since the real Whitey seemed to genuinely care for her.
I don’t think it’s a Durkon type split. The viscount said he was hoping Grawlf could resist the fungus’ call, and Whitey wanted a rematch with Blood Bath. There’s still some original personality at the wheel.
Control doesn’t need to go back to Whitey for Fungite Knight to protect the princess. We have seen him say under ZoT that he was always happy to help a princess in need. The fungus changes their priority but their personality is still the same. If Grawlf’s plan doesn’t involve killing the princess, she’ll be fine. Even if they want to kidnap the princess, Fungite will most probably keep her safe.
Also, since she’s empowered by Luck, things can swing in wild, unpredictable Rube Goldbergian ways to benefit her. If you’re opposing her you’d probably be best off keeping interaction to a minimum.
A nice complex ‘Rube Goldbgergian’ sequence showing from start to finish how some intricate chain of events happened to give her a ‘lucky’ outcome, a la a ‘Dead Like Me’ episode, would be great fun to read…it’d make a nice filler piece 😉
Remove Disease and Heal generally remove parasites too, which would kill Whitey again (we know with the guards that killing the mushroom kills the host as well). And paladins like Dorilys can innately cast remove disease. Even if she didn’t, trying to auscultate Whitey would probably reveal the fungus, which would thwart their plans.
Sure, I can see how applying mundane medical treatment might tip her off. But a basic Cure Wounds spell wouldn’t give anything away, I don’t think. (She’s a cleric, not a paladin. But even if she were using Lay on Hands, it doesn’t cure disease unless you intentionally declare that.)
I believe the spell would fizzle due to the host being technically dead. Grawlf was shown peeling off his humanoid hand to reveal the fungus underneath. The fungi are basically wearing the hosts as suits. A healing spell has no effects on corpses. That would also explain the concern about external injuries specifically.
However, it doesn’t seem to be a simple matter of their bodies being hijacked; Whitey did want to take another crack at Blood Bath, and the Viscount mentioned Grawlf falling under the sway of the fungus, so it seems that some aspects of their old personalities are still intact, including their memory. But yes, their outward appearances are pretty much shells at this point, and any attempt to heal them would expose the ruse, explaining why Rue Lily didn’t want Roxie healing her team.

Wait, she’s a human? Or is it just that they can’t tell the difference?
According to the cast page, Dorilys is human, yes.
There was also a critical missive about it. She got cursed with green on an adventure.
And is philosophical because their luck could have been worse.

Blood Bath can punch holes through that chest. I expect he can shred the wood completely after sunset. How will tying it closed help?
He’s in no condition to punch holes through it now, and it’s still early morning.
He will make a racket while doing that, so alerting them. Also, it will slow him down for at least a bit.
Host huh? So they’re not quite the same person they were before.
Host or no, though, they’re pretty small to be restaurants.

I like how everyone knows what you mean when you say a Durkon takeover.
Well, to be honest in order to understand this one just needs to stick to reading one of the most poular D&D webcomics for long enough
Just be sure to stick to their original order 😉
It might mean a Remove Disease will kill the fungus and restore the host to control.
Or kill the host outright, since the fungus is what keeps them alive. Look at what happened to the guards who got “treated” with fungicide
Yeah, but that was just killing the fungus, not removing it magically.

Dorilys will predictably obey the Rule of Funny, which can be hard if you want a guide.
Also, since she’s empowered by Luck, things can swing in wild, unpredictable Rube Goldbergian ways to benefit her. If you’re opposing her you’d probably be best off keeping interaction to a minimum.
Or not benefit her. Remember she’s green. . . .
With a shamrock shield, she has the luck ‘o the Irish 😉

The orchestrated chaos woman unpredictable? Nahh.
What would happen if she *did* use healing magic on Whitey? I wouldn’t think think it’d harm him, since he’s not technically undead.

To be honest, I wouldn’t test my luck.

Yeah. Interesting that they’d be concerned about that.
