Well, after the baseball game that devolved into a brawl against undead warlocks and an extraplanar eldritch abomination, pretty much anything else is a normal day in her life by comparison.
He has an eye; he just doesn’t use it very often. Therefore, he’s still pretty inexperienced at this whole “seeing” thing, which would explain why he hasn’t yet learned the proper terminology for complex visual patterns like “stripes”.
To get to the princess, of course. What’s the point of getting revenge only on Mimic? Her father would be alive and well without the attack on the princess.
I think that Tarta’s attack was triggered by the remark in #35 where Princess mentions that Mimic diverted the Tenticalli’s missile… and we know he diverted that missile into Plaidbeard’s ship.
I think that until then Tarta didn’t know (or wasn’t sure) who had blown up Plaidbeard’s ship.
In fact, I’ll go one further and suggest that she may not have suspected Mimic at all and was genuinely expecting Mimic to help find her dad.
If she did suspect him, she doesn’t seem to have done anything to probe him for confirmation. In #6, Tarta lays out some background about her father (and Mimic completely ignores it). I wonder if he could have pieced it together then if he had listened better.
My only objection to this is the noir femme fatale ought to have her plot intact from the beginning and not improv like this. (How to do her plot, yes, but to suddenly change from finding him to avenging him?) But who knows?
Nah, the “villain” adapting along the way is also pretty in genre for noir. Especially when it’s the [gendered]-fatale that’s suckered the protagonist into working for them.
The problem isn’t Mimic’s senses. He multiclassed into Beholder in the first arc. The problem is that Mimic doesn’t /use/ all his senses. I just checked and he didn’t open his eye once through the entire level 2 arc.
So now the question is, is that Plaidbeard’s daughter, or did Plaidbeard himself accidentally grab the belt of Gender Changing that Madeline though he had way back on page 2-14?
It’s his daughter. Tartan is the term for a specific plaid pattern, used primarily by the Scottish (different tartans identify different Scottish clans). So with the name ‘Tarta’… yeah, it wasn’t exactly hidden that she had the relation to him.
The plaid pattern also happens to be nearly identical to that on Plaidbeard’s, well, beard, save for a slight difference in color. Could just be a stock plaid pattern, but if they deliberately chose this one to connect her to Plaidbeard, then well played on their part.
I’m interested in finding out what Tarta’s deal is now that she’s shown her “true colours”. Seems pretty obvious that the crybaby angle was an act, but what about druid powers being emotion-based? Is she really a part of the Barleycharm Circle like Stabs suggested? If so, does that mean Plaidbeard was too before he became a pirate? I’m looking forward to finding at least some of that out soon.
On the alt-text, it’s probably only two questions… I would count “tell me about X” as a question in any non-technical sense, but I don’t think Stabs’s question in the last panel should be”snarled”, more of a confused aside. If we go back a page, we get a third query aimed somewhat hostilely at him, but also a non-technical fourth: “What.” from the ex-Princess.

It’s a grim situation, things are looking pretty plaid for our heroes …
They say plaidheads have the worst tempers.
(but the bear and snake and chicken forms didn’t have plaid hair.)
The snake and chicken forms didn’t have ANY hair.
Also: there’s no rule that says wild shapes resemble the user’s natural form in any way.
Rule, no. Trope, on the other hand, certainly so…

She’s gone to plaid!
I love Stabs still enjoying her drink, like this is just the same ol’, same ol’.
Well, after the baseball game that devolved into a brawl against undead warlocks and an extraplanar eldritch abomination, pretty much anything else is a normal day in her life by comparison.
Advantages to shape-shifting.
The fun thing, is Mimic even capable of sensing plaid?
He has an eye; he just doesn’t use it very often. Therefore, he’s still pretty inexperienced at this whole “seeing” thing, which would explain why he hasn’t yet learned the proper terminology for complex visual patterns like “stripes”.
He was unable to see that he was insulting Dorilys to her face.
To be fair, neither has Stabs because that’s not stripes.
If she had identified it correctly, Mimic might’ve gotten it.
I feel she could have just opened with this. Wonder why she waited until now?

Does Anti-Madeline have memories of Madeline’s experiences before she was created?
Because that looks like the most likely person to be able to recognize the hair, in this scenario.
She’ll probably have to outright say that she’s Plaidbeard’s daughter, with Mimic’s senses being what they are.
The problem isn’t Mimic’s senses. He multiclassed into Beholder in the first arc. The problem is that Mimic doesn’t /use/ all his senses. I just checked and he didn’t open his eye once through the entire level 2 arc.
He considered it. Did he actually do it?
This is the second time his being unable to see a character has been awkward.
I just mean that what he can sense seems to vary depending on the situation.
She thinks that a private eye should be able to see patterns.
And now their crimes will be plaid for!
So… any bets as to what potion Stabs is drinking in panel 3?
That’s a potion of Greater Remove Sobriety
*applause* That was just beautiful.
So now the question is, is that Plaidbeard’s daughter, or did Plaidbeard himself accidentally grab the belt of Gender Changing that Madeline though he had way back on page 2-14?
And pick up the ability to turn into a bear? Incidentally? Conceivable, but I think daughter.
That’s the plaidest hair I’ve ever seen…
You could say she’s having a plaid hair day.
That feels like a stale plaid-itude.

Her line might be, “My name is Tarta Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” But that might require a change of genre.
In this genre, the Belt of Genre Changing is covered in enamel, but when the enamel is scraped off, it turns out to be a fake.
Goodness, but that is a very loud hair color in this genre.
Sorry, I was trying to give you an up-vote, but I clicked on down by mistake, and there’s apparently no way I can undo it.
This dwarf would look better bald in my opinion.
It’d be dramatic normally, but that plaid really stands out in the noir for extra dramatic reveal.
Her sword is in the shape of a bird! or the hilt is anyway!
You’re right. Something like a falcon, perhaps. I hadn’t noticed that.
The Patreon update called it the Maltese Falchion, so there you go.
