I suspect this is setting her up to be the “prodigal daughter”, on the grounds that she’s going out, putting effort into the black market, and only after will she finally return to the castle.
Oh, and we know the Belt of Genre Changing can alter reality, possibly enough to summon another eldritch horror. So that’s convenient for the rhyming demons.
Incidentally, there’s a kind of fish nicknamed the “prodigal son”, but I’m almost certain that’s not relevant here.
Well… she did seem unhappy with the job.
Kind of like only duty kept her there, and she’d rather be off doing her own thing.
Especially once the Wight Knight was assassinated.
We’ve never seen her looking as comfortable as she is here. (This being before all hell breaks loose – or at least the 6-inch tall spawn of hell that hasn’t been seen in much too long.)
Maybe she really will never go back.
When Calamitus threw her out of the stadium, maybe she figured this was her big chance to fake her death and live her own life, on her own terms.
People have noticed that her combat style is controlled & defensive, not rage-fuelled as it used to be. Granted, her circumstances are different, but still. Character development?
Or she’s simply more relaxed where she is, fighting and acting solo, rather than having to be a political figurehead with the weight of a nation on her shoulders.
I think she may just have been drawn with large pupils. That, or she could be secretly possessed.
But honestly, it does make sense that she wouldn’t want to go back to being the Princess. She never seemed to like the job. Though she may find that running the Black Market isn’t much different, just more dangerous. On the other hand, she may have nobler reasons for not going back than “I don’t want the responsibility”. Maybe she learned something about herself that made her feel she shouldn’t go back?
Let’s consider the fact she’s related to Malevolus, a blackguard who deals with demons and other dark entities. If one member of the family is involved, who’s to say others weren’t as well? Maybe the Princess herself has demon blood in her? Maybe she didn’t know that until recently, and it’s changed her whole worldview?
There’s definitely something fishy going on here, that’s for sure.
Ah, the downsides of the “royal family” consisting of only a princess. If we had a proper king or queen somewhere, or even some other princes or princesses, then the disappearance of one person wouldn’t be such a big problem.

I think the genre change is allowing her to express emotions she couldn’t before. Those she had but wasn’t allowed to make visible by conventional webcomic humor of the type the comic started as.
I wonder if her player and the GM broke up. Maybe she’s just another PC now, and this is what she decided to do after losing her OP-as-all-hell PRC levels.

It’s in panel 6 on the wall.
Where is Anti-Madeline? She’s being missing for a long while!

I’m not all that surprised.

It looks like she has black eyes. We’ve seen her eyes before, only once, and they were white. This may not be The Princess after all…
Well, the genre has been changed to noir, so it only makes sense that her eyes have gone noir as well.
Her personality was alredy pretty noir, so maybe that has gone all the way to grimdark?
I think the white’s her sclera and the black’s her iris/pupil?

Yet her hair is changing color, back.
I think what we’re seeing there is just that it’s been growing out and not been getting dyed.
Typical gruesome implements found in an extended interrogation room.
– blood-soaked cleavers
– blood-soaked knifes and saws
– blood-soaked anchor (err, sure?)
– blood-soaked fishbone (no, wait, what?)
How recently have these things been used?
That’s the color of fresh blood. It shouldn’t still look like that if it’s been even a few hours, let alone days, since it was spilled.
Honestly, I suspect it’s actually just red paint, deliberately added to give an intimidating appearance.
Not to mention it’s unhygienic. OK, more likely, a professional would clean their tools after use, if only to prevent rust and keep them sharp.
We’re talking torture, here. Not so sure that sharp tools are required (or even wanted).
Woah, woah, WOAH! Hold the phone.
Why is she being all calm and sedate and depressed? Where’s the ass-kicker who stomped Calamitus like a empty beer can?
I DEMAND ANSWERS.
(Also, is it just me or is this the first time we’ve seen her eyes open AT ALL?)
Since you demand answers, I will answer one of your questions: It is just you. The rest of us saw her eyes open in 1-28.
Thank you Mimic, but your princess won’t be in another castle.
Mimic sure glued that glass to his hand…le again quick.

Somewhere, Malevolus is twirling his moustache in a very stereotypical way.
Um.
Am I alone in wondering if the GM broke up with his girlfriend?
Either that or as a member of the royal line, there are rules against her marrying Whitey.
Eh, he wasn’t her type anymore after he got revived.
Whose hand is that on the bar?
I believe those are the gloves the Princess was wearing.
People have noticed that her combat style is controlled & defensive, not rage-fuelled as it used to be. Granted, her circumstances are different, but still. Character development?
Just when she thinks she’s out they pull her back in.
