Cockney rhyming slang – often taken an extra step away from the original text. An example from the next comic:
“Then donder up the apples a ways.”
‘donder’ = ‘wander’, easy enough, but “up the apples” is impenetrable…
…unless you’re already familiar with a common rhyme: “apples and pears” = “stairs”
so we get “Then wander up the stairs a ways.”
And that’s just ONE speech bubble out of this ‘Bow Bell beholder’!
(but if you think over what’s said, and take the context of “directions through a dungeon”, it isn’t that hard to get the gist…)
Yet another reason to avoid East London like the plague.
As if “the plague” wasn’t enough of a reason.
