“something she consciously checks.” – Indeed. It’s canon. The actual Detect Evil spell has to be activated, or if always on, the person doing it has to concentrate on it to get info beyond “it’s smelling bad around these parts.”
Detect evil is an activated paladin ability, yes. At will cast the detect evil spell.
Plus, even if Maddie knows Malevolus is evil (and just about everyone does I think at this point), I’m pretty sure just attacking someone for having an evil alignment would still be a criminal offense in most places in a fantasy world. Not to mention Malevolus is a Duke who has been publicly given amnesty, so attacking him would likely result in legal complications, similar to attacking an evil noble without ample proof.
Paladins are lawful after all, in addition to good.
Maybe it’s like skunk musk? When someone does something Evil, they emit a stinky Evil stench that Detect Evil picks up on. Ergo, all Mal has to do is not do or plan to do anything evil in Maddie’s presence (the Deva soap probably helps too of course).
Naw, she does the TV commercials…you’ve seen them! She’s singing in a choir, sopranos pressing on both side. She’s looks nervous. Then she remembers soaping up in the tub, wings strategically placed, then cut back to happy confident angel! Followed by catch phrase of course!
“Mal’s moral compass is more of a metal detector”… I thought this might be a line from “Firefly”, and since it’s not, I’ll offer with high praise that this line is WORTHY of that series. I look forward to finding a way to include this line into conversation as soon as possible! 🙂

Turning a mailbag strip into a commercial. Now that’s evil.
Usually, I suspect, not being Evil enough around Maddie to make her suspicious works. Her Detect Evil seems to be something she consciously checks.

There’s a Critical Missive in which Maddie discusses the smells. But she does, in story, have to stop and sniff before they register.
Right, Evil’s like a bitter coffee, yeah? So…like a skunk loaded up on coffee.
Deva soap, eh? A certain giantess angel would like a few words about that. 😀

“Mal’s moral compass is more of a metal detector”… yeah, that sounds like my current party, whose alignments point due-gold.
