A while back, Boxford multiclassed in {redacted monster}. This granted him an eye, which granted him sight, which was a prerequisite for foresight. He then utilized hindsight to realize multiclassing was not the best decision he could have made. If I recall correctly, Boxford was granted a re-spec to ditch the multiclass, after which he never looked back.
Though he’s undergone some massive appearance changes if so. That’s definitely not the same distribution of eyes, and it’s not a simple matter of adding more, either.
Well, he had 18 Charisma when first we saw him and has multiclassed several times since then, so it might be even higher by now. As such, maybe he’s convinced himself it’s impossible for him to be ugly.
So I went to check for ‘Boxford’ in the character pages and didn’t find them. I am guessing I missed some running gags on this character as I remember the joke about something multi-classing into a monstrosity but no idea what their name was etc.
The monstrosity depicted here is a Critical-Missives-only joke, demonstrating what might have happened if Boxford continued down that path rather than being scared off it. Previously seen in Critical Missives #4 and #16, and doesn’t have a name.
That was in response to Princess saying you can’t re-spec while in a dungeon. I’ve always assumed that he retrained between levels 1 and 2, after he was no longer in the dungeon.
From a meta perspective, there’s the added complication that beholders are under copyright and *not* part of the SRD. Given the settlement from ~10 years ago, I suspect even referencing beholders, or that incident, would be asking for trouble.

First?
But okay, uhm, what monster is that? And is that saying “multiclass?”

This one, I think.

Critical Missives #16.
See Critical Missives #4 and#16.
If he’s so psychic, why does he not know how ugly he is?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
And he’s got at least 4 levels in Beholder.
Or perhaps, one level in Beholder, one level in Guath, one level in Spectator, one level in Death Kiss…

It’s absolutely horrifying to know that monstrosity used to be an Elf. I think. Hard to tell even from his first appearance.
He does still have a couple of elf ears. Not in the right places, but…

We found out in Level 8 that Boxford is Mimic’s real name. He seems kind of embarrassed about it, and prefers to just go by Mimic.
Boxford is Mimic, who tried multiclassing into beholder once (in the main plot, not Critical Missives). Occasional later mentions imply that he for some reason decided to keep it, despite never using it and implying he was going to re-spec it when he got the chance.

Why does everyone think he re-spec’ed? He literally said “I don’t get no re-specs”.
Now you can take that two ways, 1 – it’s a great Rodney Dangerfield line, and 2- he literally doesn’t get any re-specs.

He’s just keeping it classy.
I just realized that we missed an opportunity to bring this guy in as one of Cube’s companions for the final arc. That would have been so awesome!
Sad Face. 🙁
