“Conserve” – why, yes she did. Scorching Ray (3x) is a level 2 magic slot, Fireball is level 3. That’s very conservative an approach.
She could have gone for Blight, level 4, or even Cone of Cold, level 5. Definitively on the overkill side of “not conserving.”

Well, it does mean that they have at least 11 levels of wizard or sorcerer to get 3 scorching ray attacks. Possibly more, but hard to say right now. And if they’re at least 11th level, then they probably have at least 5 casts of 2nd level spells per day if a wizard, or 7 or more if a Sorcerer. Not to mention spells of other levels.
It does make me wonder how common high level characters are in this world, but I suppose they need to be at least decently high level to keep up with the protagonists.
